Danielle Ate the Sandwich Releases "Like A King" Today

Danielle Anderson, who makes a living writing and performing folk songs as Danielle Ate the Sandwich, today releases her new album, Like a King (June 5, 2012/Youngest Daughter Records). The new music video for the album’s first single - “Faith in a Man” – is posted now on Danielle’s YouTube homepage. Look for Danielle on tour this summer in support of Like a King.

Danielle’s music has appeared on web sites including
Daytrotter, College Humor and NPR and in every major publication in Denver and her native northern Colorado. She’s been touring across the US for over three years. Her mega popular You Tube channel has garnered nearly 6 million views. When Danielle set out to raise $6,000 on Kickstarter for the recording and production of the new album in early 2012, her fans gave her a mandate of $16,236 instead.

Like A King is Danielle’s best collection of songs to date. She has three previous releases including 2010’s Two Bedroom Apartment, which landed at the top of numerous year-end “best of” lists. She’s a striking lyricist; hers is the artful arrangement of words that doesn’t look much like Art at all when you type them out; “The Have Nots” is an aching epic of a song and its lynchpin is the line, “My grandma knows where she’s going/and me, I have no idea.”

You really have to hear her sing those words to find the extent of their impact. The way she articulates, the way she swells into the front half and falters in the second. Danielle has a way of singing that puts her right there with you in the car or sitting nearby. Live, when she is actually right there, the sensation is transporting. She can take distracted rooms and have them suddenly holding their collective breath.

It’s not that her music is placating. Much of
Like A King is deeply unsettling, in fact – many of the songs deal with losing power in horrible little strokes. These are not battles lost but rather foes who never even noticed you were there: An auto mechanic preying on your inexperience, a lover who wishes you were someone else, a realization too late.

Like A King marks a considerably larger leap from Danielle’s usual solo performance. The album features performances by seven musicians, including Chris Jusell on violin, viola, bells, shakers and typewriter, Jon Powers on drums, Scott McCormick on piano, organ and accordion, Ron Miles (Bill Frisell, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker) on trumpet, Greg Tanner Harris (the Vibes Quintet, Pete Wernick’s Flexigrass) on vibraphone, John Macy on steel guitar and Dennis Bigelow on bass, concertina and bones. “My songs are small and simple, and the players on this record helped me bring them to life,” says Danielle. “It's a newer thing to me to share my space. I really appreciate that they never ran away with the songs. They always rode their bikes in the sidewalk in front of the house.”
