I'm an Eco-Groovy Republican

- for the Grateful Web

Its funny, environmental issues are actually what began to sway me in the other 'right' direction. I moved to the Florida Keys in the mid 80's and saw many people lose use of their land through environmental regulation - and not be compensated. The government was using the environment issues to essentially seize people's property without paying for it. I didn't believe that could happen in America, so it was a shock.

A lot of it was based on bad science - there were the "hippie liberal" marine biologists who believed any sneeze hurt the environment. So they went into overkill - attempting to ban almost everything. People panicked, afraid they'd lose their property rights, which created a building boom. Within a few years, we went from having the lowest rate of growth in the state to having the HIGHEST.

With proper planning and a more balanced approach that never would've happened. But, worst of all, the precedents that were set at that time still allow the government to "take" land without just compensation. To me, that is really an issue that should be a LIBERAL one, frankly. The government should never have the power to do that, even for a good cause (it's usually a "good cause" that results in loss of liberties...take the "war on terror", for instance). Yet, liberals stood by and did nothing because it supposedly conflicted with protecting the environment, though it really doesn't.

So, what you're seeing now is kind of a backlash to that environmental extremism and over-regulation. It often didn't work, like here, actually causing MORE damage. Just because someone doesn't embrace a particular regulation doesn't mean they're anti-environment. It's got to make sense...

This is the problem with the "liberal" movement (which by the way all of you free thinkers, isn't liberating at all). I went to a liberal college and it was the most constraining experience of my life where ideas did not flow unless they were in line with what the professors (and I use the term loosely) backed up. We live in a time where humans are actually now attempting to make humans extinct (something makes me think that project won't last long since the only people participating are the members of the human extinction club...so there won't be anymore members of that club in the coming generation- ironic.)

Liberals in general are ironic. They will protest against fighters of terrorism, but won't denounce the terrorist (where were all the protesters holding signs with Bin Laden with an X through his face?). Only in America will can we have several thousand innocent people of every ethnic background and age be murdered and the liberals turn it around back on themselves. The American liberal = Self Loathing

You all have it damn good. There are more rock festivals, events, and parties this summer then I have ever seen. People are out spending money, buying cars, buying homes, etc. We have it pretty damn good here. If you ask 99% of the world's population where they would live if they had a chose and it would be the good old U.S.A. People risk their lives to just have the chance to be a member of this society. Things must not be so bad. When they start taking 20% of your pay check for "toilet paper" tax, and the terrorists start moving their "fight" back to our shores, just look back on the Bush years, you may wish you could go back...

This is hypocrisy. the liberal ideology and care for the environment is much more appealing and LOGICAL than what the conservative right provides. liberals are smarter politically, freer in state of mind, and overall entwined in the liberation and justice of society.

the conservative right doesn't like change. it is possible for a republican to be "environmentally friendly" but don't get too savvy with your glittering generalities. for the good of mankind, the liberals are the open minded ones, the ones who substantiate their claim and want some definite change for this country.

I will never agree with republicans because they have proven to be a failed political stance, and george bush is a disgrace to our country for his war crimes and lies.

the liberal movement is much more vast and 'liberating' than you will ever imagine.

there is a motive and a goal to it, and it is growing exponentially and expanding farther than you will ever know.

noones making you do it, and that is what is so wonderful about it. these people are genuine and they want to 'liberate'.

change is needed now.
