MilkDrive, Austin’s phenomenal jazz-grass band, will release its second studio album, WAVES, on June 19, 2012.

Capturing the band’s sophisticated arrangements and fierce musicianship, WAVES showcases a number of original compositions. It also features special guests Noam Pikelny (of Punch Brothers) and Futureman (of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones).

Foxfire; Conor Mulroy’s fourth independent release, is a sweet blend of bluegrass and classical music as interpreted through a progressive jazz lens.  Imagine music that blends together elements from each of these styles, but still cannot be categorized into any one of these genres.  The title is an homage to a specific type of algae that glows a bio-luminescent blue at night and can only be found in certain areas of Appalachia.

Let me begin with the disclaimer that I only consider myself a casual fan of The Expendables. It’s not that I don’t like their music; far from it, actually, but I’m not about to start referencing old B-sides off the top of my head or anything of the sort in this review.

Flatpicking legend, Doc Watson, died today at age 89.  Watson, a 7 time Grammy winner, was an influence to countless acoustic musicians, including Jerry Garcia, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Bela Fleck and many more. Born in Deep Gap, North Carolina, originally as Arthel Lane Watson, but later known as 'Doc' Watson (Doc was told he needed an easier name to remember - a fan yelled out 'Doc' at a show and it stuck), would become a pioneer in flatpicking guitar, and with a rich baritone voice, his sound would epitomize the Appalachian sound.  Doc co
