Larry Carlton Trio @ Boulder Theater

With his distinctive style and touch it would be hard not to recognize the playing of guitar legend and studio heavyweight Larry Carlton. Ranked as one of the most recorded pop and jazz guitarists in history, he has released more than 20 solo albums, done more than 3,000 studio sessions and picked up a few Grammys during the course of an illustrious career that spans four decades. His sound is stamped all over his works which range from his early stints with Jazz Crusaders, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and Michael Franks to collaborations with fellow ax-slingers Lee Ritenour and Steve Lukather (of the supergroup Toto.)
Like so many other Los Angeles studio musicians, guitarist and composer Larry Carlton was faced with a choice a number of years back: whether to go solo and develop a name for himself under his own name or to continue the less risky, more lucrative existence as a session guitarist, making good money and recording with prominent musicians. Fortunately for fans of this eclectic guitarist, he chose the former, and has recorded under his own name for Warner Bros., MCA Records and GRP Records since 1978.
Despite the tragedy that was foisted on him in the late '80s after he was shot by gun-wielding infidels, dragging him through a long and dark period of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Carlton's output over the years has been steady through the 1980s and 1990s. Carlton seems to have slowed down his touring schedule a bit, but certainly not his recording schedule. Always happy to meet with the press, Carlton has a sweet, peaceful personality, and one can hear it in his unique, rhythmic, warm guitar chords and ringing guitar tones.

Dubskin Shows No End In Sight: New Album

From the college town of Fort Collins, CO comes the blazing five-piece roots reggae band, Dubskin featuring drummer Cory Eberhard of Pretty Lights. The project, known for their off-beat bass laden rhythms and spiritually aware lyrics are releasing their sophomore effort, No end in time for free on the band’s website.

With an eye on the past and a foot in the future, Dubskin captures an authentic Caribbean sound replete with soulful vocals, newfangled ska and soaring guitar undertones. Dropping dance ready beats with spot on harmonics is second nature to the band, who has performed along side the likes of Burning Spear, Israel Vibration, Barrington Levy, Morgan Heritage, The Itals, Midnite, Mad Professor, Anthony B and Collie Buddz to name a few.

The five-piece project features a well-rounded cast of characters including Jamal Skinner (Vocals), Cory Eberhard (Drums), Jason Wieseler (Keys and Samples), Phil Salvaggio (Guitars) and Dean Curtis (Bass). Collectively the project has self-released two rousing albums since their 2006 inception. However, it’s No end in time that showcases the projects ability to shine. The album, which was also mixed and dubbed by Jason “Jocko” Randall of the popular nationally touring band John Brown’s Body has already made a significant buzz on the reggae circuit. Using only the power of community networking and the rumble of word of mouth marketing, the release has registered thousands of downloads.

The project will be taking their upbeat dance party to the streets in 2010, with a number of select performances on the table. With a genuine feel that is both old and new, Dubskin is bound to make waves in the coming year, inspiring a new sound for music fans of all types.

DSO Spring Tour

New West Coast Dates

As the winter ice begins to melt, we will start our Spring Tour in April. Joining us on guitar and vocals for this tour will be Stu Allen of (JGB). With his eagerness to improvise and his commitment to making every performance unique, Stu has made extensive contributions to the jam music scene. In the early 1990's, he co-founded the Minnesota-based acoustic-electric jam band, Blue Man Jive. In addition, he is a founding member of The Jones Gang , Minneapolis' premier Grateful Dead tribute band. He can't wait to get out on the road and play for you folks. The tour will kick off with a run through the Colorado Rockies including stops in Aspen, Avon and 2 nights in Boulder at The Boulder Theater of all places! From there, it's westward bound to Portland, Seattle and Reno before another 2 night stand, this time in San Francisco at The Regency Ballroom. After San Fran it's on to LA for a show at the El Rey Theatre before closing out the tour in Solona Beach. Rocky Mountain High to California Sun. Hope to see you out there!

Visit our TOUR DATES PAGE for tickets, more info and additional show announcements this coming week.

A Cosmic Time Was Had By All

It seemed that everyone had a blast this year as we celebrated the New Year in Baltimore at Rams Head Live with 6 plus hours of music. The Bridge kicked off the night with a smokin' set with Rob Koritz sitting in for most of the show. We then rolled into our 2nd ever Acoustic Set on the east coast: Deep Elem, Monkey, Cold Jordan, You Ain't Woman Enough, Midnight Moonlight, Mountains of the Moon into Ripple. We took a short break and rocked right into our 1st Electric Set: Help>Slip>Franklin's, Cassidy (w/Donna), Next Time You See Me, Cumberland, Midnight Hour - into the countdown and back to Midnight Hour>China>Rider. At midnight, there was the thunder of confetti cannons, a shower of balloons and a return of Father Time as he welcomed in the New Year by shadowing the musicians and dancing his timeless freaky dance with Donna Jean. As the confetti settled and the balloons kept bouncing, we went into our 3rd Set Scarlet (w/Donna)>William Tell>The Eleven>Fire(w/Both ladies)>Drumz>Sp...anish jam>Alligator>Blues for Allah>St Stephen>Viola Lee. Encores w/ both ladies...I'll Be With Thee>Tangled Up in Blue. We hope that you all had as much fun as we did and we wish you all the happiest and healthiest of New Years.

The Boat Was A Rockin'

As the ship set sail, DSO launched their first set of the week on the Pool Deck with an original setlist packed with gems. A massive segway of Playin in the Band-> Cryptical->The Other One->Cryptical->Drums->Space->Playin in the Band->Eyes of the World->Sugar Magnolia sent the ship dancing into the high seas. A couple nights later the band held court in the Teatro Carlo Felice Theater closing out night 4 of the cruise. From the opening jam that led to Shakedown Street, the night was on. The sets highlight was the run of Alligator->St Stephen->William Tell Bridge->The Eleven->Drums->Space-> Truckin->Death Don't Have No Mercy->Lovelight.

In addition to the two formal sets, various DSO members were found all over the boat in different musical groupings. Both Rob Koritz and Rob Barraco were found in The Jam Room well past 5:00 am on more than one occasion. Rob Koritz joined The Everyone Orchestra for their improvised set. Dino joined the Rock Star Karaoke Band which included members of Hot Buttered Rum. As pictures and recordings surface we are sure to uncover other stories and will share them as they come to light.

Dark Star Orchestra @ Boulder Theater

DSO sing entire shows from the Grateful Dead's 30 years of extensive touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates the original song for song performance set list for an entirely new generation of, as well as old school, Deadheads. Dark Star Orchestra performs Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers. The composer spirit is derived and channeled as the players capture the excitement and innovation of the original performances and compositions. Touring nationwide for nine years to the tune of nearly 1500 shows since forming, the band's determined commitment to "raising the Dead" has drawn national media attention.

Precision is king with DSO; the band adapts their stage positioning, vocal arrangements, specific musical equipment and instruments to fit the era of the show they are performing. Following each performance the band announces the date and venue of the original performance. Dark Star Orchestra could dip into any incarnation of the dead at any of their shows, allowing fans to experienceˇ shows that happened long before they were born.

Super Diamond @ The Boulder Theater

When your parents popped in a Neil Diamond tape on repeat during long interstate road trips, you reluctantly sang along. Never thought you'd turn out to be a Diamond fan now, right? But singing along to "Sweet Caroline" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" is so addictive now, you'd do anything to see Neil on stage. A band out of San Francisco can put a rest to that Diamond thirst. Super Diamond delivers a high-octane Diamond tribute show that rocks! Since 1993, Super Diamond has made it their mission to spread the "good word of Neil" to all, bridging the gap between young and old, rich and poor, great and small...

Bela Fleck The Africa Project @ Boulder Theater

In his most ambitious project to date, renowned musician Béla Fleck explores the origins of the banjo. Fleck discovered in his travels in Africa that, while the banjo is traditionally considered an American instrument, its origins lie far from her shores. Throw Down Your Heart, the award-winning film, documented Fleck’s travels and explorations of music. After a celebrated album release and a successful tour in 2009, Fleck returns to the stage with more collaborations with some of Africa’s most talented musicians.

Béla Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. While still in high school he began experimenting with playing bebop jazz on his banjo, mentored by fellow banjo renegade Tony Trischka. In 1980, he released his first solo album, Crossing the Tracks, with material that ranged from straight ahead bluegrass to Chick Corea’s “Spain.” In 1989 he formed the genre-busting Flecktones, with members equally talented and adventurous as himself. Béla plays acoustic and electric banjos, mixing a bluegrass and folk sound into a modern improvisational style. The recipient of Multiple Grammy Awards going back to 1998, Béla Flecks' total Grammy count is 11 Grammys won, and 27 nominations. He has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history.

Groundation's Bob Marley Tribute Tour @ Boulder Theater

Groundation began their annual Bob Marley Tribute Tour in 2000 as a means of celebrating the life and material of a true musical prophet. Marley's impact is hard to overstate. No other musician of the 20th Century is more well known across all parts of the globe than Marley.

Groundation does not simply rest on the well known hits from Marley's hugely successful “best-of” albums. Their tribute tour differs than other bands' similar outings by exposing those people familiar with Marley's music and message to the lesser known material of his catalog. While true that the inescapable sing-alongs do occur at these tribute shows, more often than not even the most seasoned Marley aficionado will hear songs they have yet to see performed live.

Groundation has drawn international recognition through their musicianship, which is unrivaled in the genre. A nine-piece band featuring swirling horns and keyboards, multiple percussionists, thundering b3 organ and bass, and a trio of lead and harmony vocalists, Groundation covers all bases with their wide ranging sound. Their live shows are renowned for over the top improvisational energy and positivity and their progressive sound is catching on, having played in 35+ countries on four continents in just the last few years, including headlining slots at major multi-genre festivals the world over.

These are not lame imitators attempting to replicate Bob's music. Groundation uses the template of Marley's music and liberally adds their own colors of the sonic palate creating altogether new and unique versions of timeless tracks. Groundation is the biggest, most respected American Reggae band in the world today and their tribute to the King of Reggae music is unlike any others. Come join us and find out why...
