Taj Mahal

Grandeur and a star-filled cast, along with soulful ballads, New Orleans-style funk, and plenty of raucous blues and rock abounded in the ornate, 2,800-capacity Fox Theater in Oakland, Calif., as a 29-song, three-plus-hour production of The Last Waltz Tour 2022 wrapped up its two-night residency on December 3.

The Phantom Blues Band has backed Taj Mahal for about forever, and as first-call L.A. session cats, played behind lots of other greats, from Bonnie Raitt and Etta James to Joe Cocker and Bob Marley.  After years behind Taj, they began to release their own albums, and that’s told below.

Today, multi-GRAMMY award winning and multi-genre traversing legend Taj Mahal announced he will celebrate his 80th birthday with the GRAMMY Museum, who will host an intimate conversation moderated by Scott Goldman on Thursday, June 16.
