The time honored tradition of bands playing after Phish was alive and well in Denver, Colorado, as not one, but two bands kept the party going upon the conclusion of the Dick's Sporting Good Stadium event at both Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom and Cervantes Other Side last Friday night.

One of the last surviving members of the Triumvirate of American Funk Godfathers, George Clinton, brought an army of Funk-inspired musicians to the new YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California. Along with James Brown and Sly Stone, the 82-year-old Clinton is considered one of the founders of the Funk music genre. The concert was the final lap of the One Nation Under a Groove Tour, billed as George Clinton and P Funk’s farewell tour.

Jalbatross is the musical alias of veteran guitarist Ryan Jalbert, the longtime funky strummer for Denver based funk group, The Motet. For his debut album, the guitarist recruited his bandmate Joey Porter (keys), brother Colin Jalbert (drums) and longtime friend Tim Philpott (bass) for a batch of instrumental tunes displaying Jalbert’s original composition and production.

The funk was alive at Riverfront Live in Cincinnati on Sunday, June 26, when George Clinton brought the One Nation Under A Groove Tour to town.

The Denver, Co based funk and soul ensemble The Motet brought a fiery dance party to the jam friendly Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, NY last Friday night as part of their Don't Keep On Stoppin' tour. They were accompanied by percussionist Mike Dillon, who is a veteran of the jam rock scene. Currently, the band is focused on instrumental sounds and reconnecting with their jazz improvisational roots.
