The “Day of the Dead” Celebration believes that on every 2nd of November, the gateway between Mictlan, the ancient Aztec Land of the Dead, and our world opens so we may celebrate with our lost loved ones for one special time of year. Now the Ninth Annual Florida “Day of the Dead” introduces “Night of the Dead” which takes the celebration to a whole new level the following day and creates an exciting atmosphere of music and dance.
The Grateful Dead experience of Dark Star Orchestra, performing two full sets, headlines the first ever “Night of the Dead” Celebration Saturday, November 3rd, at the Revolution Live Street Party, 100 SW Third Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The show also features the creative spark of the seminal New Orleans band Galactic and guitar driven virtuosity of the Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio. The gates for this Revolution Live Street Party open at 3PM with a mariachi band, food and craft vendors and more events. Early Bird tickets go on sale August 22nd / 10AM.
With their unique link to the Grateful Dead, Dark Star Orchestra is the perfect choice to headline this first ever Festival. Offering a continually evolving artistic outlet within the Grateful Dead’s musical canon, members of Dark Star Orchestra seek out the unique style of each performance era and offer their own interpretations and improvisations at each show. Using entire set lists from the Grateful Dead’s decades of touring as a launching pad, Dark Star Orchestra recreates song for song performances straight from the set list of these historic shows. Dark Star Orchestra isn’t a cover band. Its shows are not even meant as tributes. What Dark Star Orchestra tirelessly strives for and achieves is a continuation of the spirit of what has now become over forty years of the Grateful Dead’s timeless music.
It’s been more than 20 years since Ben Ellman, Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Jeff Raines and Rich Vogel began exploring the seemingly limitless musical possibilities born out of their work together as Galactic. Since then, the seminal New Orleans band has consistently pushed artistic boundaries on the road and in the studio, approaching their music with open ears and drawing inspiration as much from the sounds bubbling up from their city’s streets as they do from each other. Shot through with soul, funk, blues and rock, their music is an organic riff on elements of Galactic’s past, filtered through the lens of where they’re headed.
Whether rocking out to his own compositions in the jazz or jamband scenes or presenting his unique interpretations of musical greats such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Wes Montgomery, guitarist Bobby Lee Rodgers is staking out a legendary path with fans and critics alike. His unique sound and stylings are garnering a growing popularity wherever he performs.
