Celebrated soul collective The Nth Power proudly announce their long-awaited album, Reverence, will release Wednesday, Sept. 29. The trio, featuring guitarist and vocalist Nick Cassarino, drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie and bassist Nate Edgar, have emerged from a quiet pandemic to drop their first studio release in six years. Co-produced by the band with additional production from Rick St. Hilaire (Alicia Keys, Tribe Called Quest, Earth Wind and Fire) and Will Bradford (SeepeopleS, theWorst), Reverence was recorded at legendary Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta and Chillhouse Studios in Boston and offers 11 transcendent originals that represent the group’s most profound and inspired work to date.
Praised for their world-class musicianship and intensely charismatic live performances, The Nth Power hails from diverse musical backgrounds, races and creeds. The trio brings together some of the most coveted backing musicians in the game: renowned funk drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie, Beyonce’s former world-touring drummer who’s worked with Maceo Parker, Chaka Kahn, Ivan Neville, Robert Randolph and has been a guest drummer multiple times on Late Night With Seth Meyers; bassist Nate Edgar, longtime member of legendary reggae Billboard chart-toppers, John Brown's Body; and guitarist and lead vocalist/songwriter Nick Cassarino, known for his work with Big Daddy Kane and collaborations with Jennifer Hartswick and Christian McBride. The Nth Power has garnered praise from Relix, Consequence, Huffington Post, Okayplayer, Modern Drummer and more for their passionate anthems and intense live performances.
Both musically and lyrically, Reverence presents a full-circle evolution in the trio’s distinctive sound, which taps into an energy that is often both sensual and spiritual, infusing high doses of rock, soul, funk, reggae, gospel and rhythm and blues. The new songs spread a deep message of hope, empathy, gratitude, self-forgiveness and, above all, attest to the universal power of love.
The Nth Power dedicates Reverence to the memory of their longtime friend and musical brother Kofi Burbridge of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who passed away in February 2019. The Grammy-winning keyboardist blesses 10 out of 11 tracks on the album with his presence, elevating the robust new songs with some of the final musical recordings of his career.
“It means everything that Kofi was playing with us before his transition,” says Cassarino. “He brought the same energy to the studio that he brought to the stage, that he brought to rehearsal, that he brought to dinner — greatness.”
The Nth Power dives deep out of the gate on Reverence with the album’s lead track “Reach Out”, which offers a mission statement of hope and strength through self-doubt. “A New Day” presents one of the band’s most approachable melodic moments to date while “Joy” is an uplifting tune that dabbles in both bossa nova and jazz flourishes and features a delightful flute solo by Burbridge.
The Nth Power reprises two classic songs from previous albums — “Spirits” and “Holy Rain.” The new treatment on “Spirits” features guest vocalists Ivan Neville and Nick Daniels III of Dumpstaphunk as well as an appearance by legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker. Celebrated vocalist Cheryl Pepsii shines as a guest on “Holy Rain” and the gospel-leaning “Freedom.” “I Will Never Leave You” slows down with a heartfelt promise of steadfast support through adversity. Cassarino wrote the song shortly after he and the band connected with the Harold Robinson Foundation (of which Glaspie is now a board member) and experienced the organization’s first-hand efforts to change the lives of at-risk youth in metro Los Angeles. “Take My Soul” tells the story of a runaway slave and brings an Americana-blues departure for the group, while the infectiously funky vibe on “Tribe” returns to the band’s rhythmic roots — and reinforces the album’s overall message of empowerment and appreciation.
