STS9 released their latest album THE UNIVERSE INSIDE to critical praise September 2, 2016 via the band's own 1320 Records, marking their first new full-length album in nearly seven years. The 13-track album--the band's first featuring bassist Alana Rocklin--debuted at #1 on the iTunes and Amazon Electronic Albums Charts and #2 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart, marking their highest position to date on that chart. THE UNIVERSE INSIDE features lead single "Get Loud," a collaboration with singer/songwriter Betty Idol and acclaimed production team the J.U.S.T.I.CE. League, and opens with "Supercluster," which samples the original NASA STS-9 radio transmission and represents the band's return from a journey that began with their 1998 debut, Interplanetary Escape Vehicle.
Written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band at their own 1320 Mission Control in Santa Cruz, CA, THE UNIVERSE INSIDE continues the band's stylistic exploration in the studio, with Ben Kaye from Consequence Of Sound saying, "The Universe Inside sees the band return with a message...in all, the record marks a new dawn for the long-standing outfit" (8/26/16) and Jambands.com's John Patrick Gatta noting, "With the creation of The Universe Inside the quintet may have put out its most important album - artistically and conceptually. Among the spacey atmospherics and danceable rhythms are lyrics and recorded content that reminds us of our interconnectivity, particularly at a time when the world needs a message of unity not division" (12/19/16). Fox Adams from Sound & Silence Magazine added, "it contains 13 tracks of celestial sounds and goose bump inducing riffs that will take you on a journey back to the band's funk roots" (8/30/16) and Greg Schwartz from PopMatters.com called it, "an energetic disc with a fresh distillation of their ongoing effort to create infectious grooves with a spiritually uplifting vibration" (12/15/16). Kyle Rutherford of The Untz also praised the album saying, "The Universe Inside is a conscious expression of the beauty in the world, and a motivation for all listeners to follow the path they wish to choose" (9/5/16) with Grateful Web's Elliot Engebretson describing it as, "a melodical masterpiece with a message, one that speaks of space, time and this cosmic universe we are all a part of" (10/20/16).
