There’s no mistaking Cosmic Guilt. The sometimes ten-piece group, clad in meticulously hand-crafted Western uniforms, has much to offer the world of psychedelic folk rock. Led by primary songwriter James Everhart, the Guilt is a super-group of working musicians from bands such as Ruby The Hatchet, Ron Gallo, Scantron, and Milieu Lust. They’ve been captivating discerning Philadelphia-area crowds for years.
On May 31st, Cosmic Guilt will release their highly anticipated sophomore album, "Palace of Depression," and to celebrate, they will perform a special hometown show at the First Unitarian Church that evening. The album was recorded in Philadelphia at Hi5 studio, with select tracks supported by Silent Partner, owned by engineer Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes). The record was mastered by Charlie Stavish (Jenny Lewis).
Cosmic Guilt will tour in support of "Palace of Depression" this spring across New England. Their debut self-titled album (2022) captured the chemistry of their live performances in lush layers of harmonies, steady guitar, ripping harmonica, and searing pedal steel, all tinged with the anxiety of present times. Drawing inspiration from sentimental country predecessors like Lee Hazelwood and Fairport Convention, their songs convey an earnestness that impresses an agnostic spirituality, finding solace and remorse in the darker parts of the rock musician psyche.
An ambitious group, Cosmic Guilt has built a dedicated following, playing (and selling out) stages like Johnny Brenda’s and Brooklyn Bowl Philly. Leading triple-A NPR affiliate, WXPN, has recognized the group’s potential from the beginning, inviting them to play at 2022’s NON-COMMvention and XPoNential Festival the same year. No strangers to the industry, Cosmic Guilt has shared stages with The Walkmen, White Denim, Father John Misty, Sharon Van Etten, Charlie Crockett, Toby Leaman (of Dr. Dog), and Jenny Lewis. Their debut album was recognized by WXPN as one of their top 25 albums of the year.
