The Surf Hotel, located in the new urbanism neighborhood of South Main in Buena Vista, CO., announced it will host its first winter celebration on The LAWN New Year’s Eve. The evening will feature live music with Rapidgrass, hot beverages, and fire pits. This inaugural event will also offer visitors a free art installation spotlighting artist Brett Phares of lightStruct, who will design five digital light projections throughout South Main.
The LAWN is the Surf Hotel’s outdoor venue located on South Main Town Square, which boasts 360 degrees of stunning Colorado landscape. Since its inception, The LAWN has hosted award-winning and legendary artists including The California Honeydrops, Leftover Salmon, Thievery Corporation, The Movement, Israel Vibrations, and others. This will be the first time guests will have the opportunity to experience it in winter. The festive setting will include a special Art After Dark with immersive art/tech startup lightStruct which made its first appearance during The LAWN’s Thievery Corporation show this summer. lightStruct’s founder Brett Phares creates large-scale projection mapping, murals, and interactive light sculptures around the world. The Surf Hotel wanted to provide both locals and visitors another opportunity to experience this artist whose work has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine.
Gates open at 6:30 pm and the musical act Rapidgrass will perform from 7-9 pm. Rapidgrass is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning band known for its original songs in the progressive bluegrass genre. Although widely considered a bluegrass band, their classification of music can best be described as "rapidgrass" due to its high energy and rapid-paced performances featuring a wide range of influences including gypsy jazz, jamgrass, western swing, and classical music. Rapidgrass has built a loyal following of fans young and old that reaches across North America and throughout Europe.
To round out the festivities the Surf Hotel will host two nights of dance parties with Denver-based multi-instrumentalist SoDown who is best known for his signature saxophone funk-infused performances and stunning releases. SoDown will take the stage in the Ivy Ballroom on December 30th & 31st for his debut performance in Buena Vista. SoDown has quickly become an absolute must-see for anyone looking to jam out with performances at some of the biggest festivals like Coachella, Electric Forest, Global Dance, and Sonic Bloom. Blurring the lines between the organic and the electronic, the music is both exhilarating and meditative all at once. SoDown will perform with supporting artists Gravitrax, & Kyral x Banko on Friday 12/30, and with Underlux & MZG on 12/31 immediately following the Rapidgrass performance on The LAWN.
