Sqwerv has announced the release of their highly anticipated new studio album, “Mirage,” scheduled for September 7th, 2024. Known for their eclectic mix of genres and a deep-rooted connection to Denver's ever-evolving music landscape, the album, recorded at The Keep Recording studios in Denver, Colorado, features seven tracks, each offering a distinct and immersive journey.
Building on the success of Sqwerv’s Hors D’oeuvres EP series—a trio of releases that explored a more stripped-down, experimental approach earlier this year—the band’s latest work delves into a more complex, progressive, and psychedelic rock sound, demonstrating what the band members can achieve in the studio. Characterized by intricate vocal harmonies, layered instrumentation, and a studio-driven production, “Mirage” leverages a variety of sounds, including multiple guitar tones, keyboards, pianos, and string sections.
“Mirage’s” diverse range of musical exploration reveals standout tracks that showcase Sqwerv’s creative evolution. “King George” features a lush string section composed by keyboardist Jack Marty, marking the band’s first venture into orchestral arrangements in the studio. “Polaris” delves into new territory with its blend of heavy psychedelic riffs, introducing a bold, intense sound to Sqwerv’s repertoire, while “When The Dust Settles” is a cinematic experience, incorporating elements of theater and sound design that transport listeners onto a ship on the open ocean for an adventure reminiscent of The Odyssey. Notably, “Morning Song” and “King George” both feature lead vocals by bassist Caden Kramer and Marty, marking their debut as vocalists on Sqwerv studio albums.
In contrast to the band’s lauded previous releases, improvisation is kept at a minimum, and precision and composition are front and center. “Mirage” integrates elements of theater, foley artistry, and synth-driven jams, creating a rich and engaging listening experience. From heavy metal riffs to lilting acoustic guitar passages, the offering takes listeners on an unforgettable sonic journey. The recording process for “Mirage” took place over the course of February 2024, with the album being meticulously crafted over the span of a month.
Of course, Sqwerv’s magic isn’t confined to the studio. Fresh off their consecutive seven-week national tour, guitarist/vocalist Guy Frydenlund, bassist Caden Kramer, drummer Zach Bulgarelli, and keyboardist Jack Marty have proven that their live performances are nothing short of riveting. Seamlessly blending groove, counterpoint, polyrhythms, and on-the-fly improvisation, the band delivers shows that leave audiences craving more. Denver Westword praised Sqwerv, saying, “They let the music do the talking live, and (it) is indicative of the band’s growth since it got together in 2017.”
Sqwerv’s support slot for legends George Clinton and Parliament Funk at the Ogden Theater in early June, along with their upcoming second appearance alongside jam rock favorites Spafford on August 15th, 2024, underscores the band’s ability to command main stages, and deeply connect with listeners—a skill they’ve honed since their early days playing local open jams and clubs.
To celebrate the new release of “Mirage,” as well as coming-off a highly-successful summer tour that had the band playing the midwest to the east coast, Sqwerv is hosting a special release party at Cervantes' Other Side in Denver on September 7th – the same day the album is available on all streaming platforms. The event will feature performances by Chirp, led by Guy Frydenlund's brother, and Denver-based Break Signals.
