Cornmeal
2014 was a year of change for jamgrass favorites Cornmeal. With a strong lineup including Scott Tipping guitar (Backyard Tire Fire), Phil Roach on fiddle (Giving Tree Band), and Drew Littel on drums, along with 15 year veteran original members Chris Gangi on bass, and Wavy Dave Burlingame on banjo Cornmeal is ready to again take their place at the healm of progressive Americana.
After a patient and long 2-year search Cornmeal is thrilled to officially welcome fiddler Phillip Roach into the family. Phil has been a long time friend of the band and as his tenure with The Giving Tree Band came to a close in early 2014, it only made sense to bring him aboard for some sit ins and collaborations with Cornmeal over this past year. He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist with a diverse musical palate bringing passion and unrivaled energy to the stage.

I’m searching for phrases to describe Phases of the Moon Music & Art Festival. It began as a dark side of the moon, but that was just a phase. As an audience, our hackles were already up, howling at the moon before the weekend ever arrived. Through no fault of the Phases organizers, RatDog had to cancel their appearance. Bobby Weir’s lightening is lazy.

Since Chicago-based bluegrass band Cornmeal formed in 2000, they have seen over 13 members in just four short album releases. Cornmeal is without a doubt a band of transition and change, holding on to a high level of skill and stage presence. Four-piece Cornmeal played at The Fox Theater in Boulder, CO on Thursday, August 21st. Although seemingly different members each show, Cornmeal has been playing hard-hitting jam-filled bluegrass for over a decade.
For the third year in a row I had the honor to attend one of my favorite events all year. There is nothing else in this world that can put a smile on my face quite like a familiar Grateful Dead tune can. This year at Dark Star Jubilee was just as beautiful as the last three. I couldn’t have picked a better way to spend my Memorial Day weekend. As I walked through the gates, and to the top of the ridge of the pine trees, I remembered what it was like to feel at home.
After a brief hiatus while bringing together a fresh lineup, Cornmeal is back at it…and in a big way! After playing a few select shows in early November, Cornmeal is very excited to be back in their hometown of Chicago for one of their favorite traditions, the 13th annual Cornmeal Thanksgiving show at the Vic on November 30th. They will be joined by very special guest Willie Watson (formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show).
By the fireside glow of the happy hippie house I heard of the legend of the Whippersnap Music and Arts Festival. It is a family friendly event of the new paradigm. I have heard of the mobile stage that visits the campsites as a parade for the kids that maybe can’t play well with others or for kids that prefer the shade of their own campsites and their iPods rather than communing together at the main stage. I’ve heard of a miraculous place where grandmas, mommas, babies and party kidz alike were togeth
