David Grisman

Honoring Dawg music, along with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia's legacy, is at the heart of the Sam Grisman Project. The group was founded by Grisman's incredibly gifted son, Sam, who is a chip off the old block with seamless transitions between electric and upright bass. It helped that he was in the room when some of these timeless compositions were penned, but Sam put in the time to hone his craft.

On the occasion of Jerry Garcia's birthday, renowned musician David Grisman reflects on his late friend and musical collaborator. Grisman recalls Garcia as a uniquely talented musician, artist, and human being with a kind soul— and a great friend. Their friendship began 60 years ago at a Bill Monroe show at Sunset Park in West Grove, PA, where both traveled—Garcia, notably, from much farther—to see the Father of Bluegrass music. This meeting marked the start of a deep personal and musical relationship.

This special edition sees David Grisman reuniting with Red Allen, the man who gave him his first hardcore bluegrass job in his band, The Kentuckians. The reunion is complemented by the extraordinary talents of bluegrass veterans Herb Pedersen, Jim Buchanan, and DGQ bassist Jim Kerwin.

Today, we celebrate the birth of a man who was the quiet, steady pulse behind some of the most beloved music in American history. John Kahn, born on this day, was not just a bassist; he was the heartbeat of Jerry Garcia's myriad musical endeavors, the unassuming yet indispensable presence that grounded Garcia's flights of fancy.

Join the festivities underground on Sunday, June 30th, for an extraordinary evening at The Caverns as we commemorate the golden anniversary of the iconic bluegrass ensemble, Old & In the Way. This special event features a once-in-a-lifetime performance by founding member Peter Rowan and the talented Sam Grisman Project, fronted by Sam Grisman, son of David Grisman, another original band member.

The Infamous Stringdusters should be way more famous.

Not to say they haven’t earned numerous accolades, including a Grammy win for Best Bluegrass Album in 2018. The quintet also tops the bill at many string-based festivals. While perhaps not yet a “household name” in the bluegrass pantheon, the Stringdusters may be the worst-kept secret in the genre.

Acoustic Disc is thrilled to spotlight an extraordinary piece of bluegrass history this week with the featured album "Breakdown" by the iconic ensemble Old & In the Way. Originally released in 1997, this remarkable live recording showcases the virtuosic talents of Vassar Clements on fiddle, Jerry Garcia on vocals and banjo, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, Peter Rowan on vocals and guitar, and John Kahn on acoustic bass.

Old and In the Way were (ironically) mostly not old – and certainly not at all in anyone’s way! – when they gathered in 1973 to play about 50 live shows. Fiddler Vassar Clements, born in 1928 and having joined Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys at 21, was still under 50. The other members of OAITW were only about 30 at the time, give or take a few years.
