March 2014

Most folks going out to see live music generally seek a familiar favorite band, or at the very least a certain style or genre implied. Rarely can an act draw interest based on anything without these qualities. Matt Butler’s Everyone Orchestra is the exception. Butler is a fantastic multi-instrumentalist (primarily a drummer) who decided to abolish all of the above qualifiers of what constitutes a traditional band.

Though they characterize their sound as gypsy jazz and titled their latest album Adventures in Vagabondia, David and Enion Pelta-Tiller, the husband-and-wife duo fronting acoustic band Taarka, weren’t planning on becoming full-fledged nomads. Fate forced their hand, however, when they lost their home to Colorado’s devastating fall floods. Undaunted, they spent the winter in Virginia planning a two-month spring run through Colorado, California and Oregon.

Considering what they’ve done, it’s hard to believe London Grammar released their first album If You Wait a mere six months ago.  It featured their already-popular EP Metal & Dust from earlier in the year.  Immediately, they were on the radar, hitting the top of the charts in UK and Australia.  One more example, last week they opened for Coldplay.  Yes, really.  It sounds beyond ludicrous that they have already had so much success, until you hear them.Following Hannah Reid’s {vocalist} and Dan Rothman’s {guita

Wakarusa Music Festival is teaming up with several national and local non-profits organizations.  The non-profit will have a chance to share materials and their mission on-site at Wakarusa, June 5-8, 2014 on Mulberry Mountain in Ozark, AR.

The 5th annual California Roots Music and Arts Festival will take place at the historic Monterey County Fairgrounds from May 23-25, 2014.  This year’s impressive lineup combines the best talent from the progressive US Reggae scene with SOJA, Rebelution, 311, and Pepper with Jamaican favorites including Steel Pulse, Ziggy Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, and many more.

Sometimes it’s cool to catch a concert in Boulder that isn’t at Boulder or Fox Theatres. We love both of those venues, but there are so many lesser-appreciated venue spaces attached to bars and restaurants primarily in the downtown area. I include Mountain Sun Brewery Restaurant & Pub, Laughing Goat Coffeehouse, Connor O’Neil’s Irish Pub, and Lazy Dog Saloon all in this category. Perhaps the most underappreciated venue space downtown in Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place.
