Real Gone Music July 29, 2014 Release: Dream Academy Collection

With their varied instrumentation, intimate song stylings, and poetic, allusive lyrics, The Dream Academy always stood apart from their '80s British rock brethren; that they dedicated their hit song, "Life in a Northern Town," to Nick Drake and minimalist composer Steve Reich spoke volumes as to the reach of their intellectual and artistic ambition. Indeed, though they were together for only three albums and a handful of singles, Nick Laird-Clowes, Kate St.

On Highway 61: Music, Race, and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom

Dennis McNally knows a thing or two about cultural history. As the biographer for both the Grateful Dead and Jack Kerouac, this bestselling author lives, breathes, and fully engages with his passion. This is why I think his forthcoming book, On Highway 61: Music, Race, and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom (on sale: October 14, 2014) will become a treasured book for music historians, critics, and most importantly, music fans.

Phish | Fuego | New Music Review

It has been eight months since Phish debuted their new album in its entirety on stage at the Halloween show in Atlantic City, much to the surprise of fans who assumed (quite wrongly) the band would instead cover a classic album as they have done in the past.  Reviews of that performance and the songs have been mixed among their fan base, and now with the album release of Fuego fans can finally hear the finished product that began that fateful night.  And once again, fans are going to be quite surprised.

Analog Son | New Music Review

It is quite rare for album art to get noticed in the age of iTunes and Mp3 players. But I found myself captivated by the cover of Analog Son’s eponymously titled debut album when it arrived in the mail. I couldn’t help but notice a distinct similarity to one of funk’s most celebrated records. On the cover of Maggot Brain, Funkadelic’s ‘71 masterpiece, a woman is buried neck deep in the dirt, her licorice-colored Afro almost camouflaged by the soil that surrounds it.

Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival 2014 | Preview

An unbelievable line-up. Food made fresh, local and right. Camping that’s just enough jam-session, just enough ‘kick back and watch the sunset.’ An energy that is beyond description. It’s the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in the foothills of the Catksills outside of Albany, NY, July 17-20 and its high time you came to this premier bluegrass extravaganza.

Rob McCoury set to release first solo album in August

Strike up a conversation with Rob McCoury, and it won’t take long for you to realize that you’ve met one of the most easygoing musicians around—a guy who’s happy to chat with just about anyone on just about anything, or to just quietly watch and enjoy what’s going on around him.  When he puts on his banjo picks, though, it’s another story.  “My first love will always be traditional bluegrass,” he says with a smile.  “When it’s right, there’s just nothing better.

Mr. Breakdown Releases New EP, 'The Purple Bag'

Mr. Breakdown, the next generation of the New-Funk movement, has dropped their new EP The Purple Bag. The soulful crew from Nyack, NY throws down real-deal grooves in this variety pack of funk.

The band’s hard hitting, booty shakin' sound brings a different flavor to each track - paying homage to some of the all-time great funk-a-teers with nods to James Brown, Prince & The Meters.

Miss Grizzly | 'Miss Grizzly' | New Music Review

You can tell by listening to real rock music by the impression it makes on the world and by the footprint it leaves behind. Sometimes it can come out in a passionate vocal line, a social movement, or a song that is sung with emotional bewilderment. The new EP/album that bears the same name as the band is a non-stop presentation of all-out rock n’ roll as described above. Making use of every rock trick in the book, it’s hard not to find something you’ll like on this 5 track collection.
