CALIFORNIA ROOTS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL CELEBRATES WOMEN IN MUSIC

For over a decade, California Roots Music & Arts Festival has been bringing the best reggae, roots music, rock, hip hop and psychedelic art center stage at the iconic Monterey County Fair and Event Center. This month they celebrate Women in Music for “Women’s History Month!” Highlighting their on-going support for Women in Music, this year’s festival features a stellar line-up of women fronted musical acts like HIRIE, Nattali Rize, Vana Liya, Sa-Roc, Eli-Mac, Lila Iké, Sevana and Artikal Sound System’s Logan Rex. In addition to the talent on stage, the driving force behind the scenes of the festival is comprised of over 70% women bosses!

HIRIE is a pop reggae act led by front woman Trish Jetton. The mainstay at the festival and headliner act, HIRIE has boldly paved the way for women across the industry. Already a long-time Cali Roots favorite, get ready to hear one of the most inspiring and successful women in the scene take center stage. Nattali Rize will also be returning to Cali Roots this year! Of mixed global heritage, with dominant Native American and Samoan roots, Nattali Rize is known around the world for her work fronting epic roots band Blue King Brown as well as for her unwavering commitment to using her voice and music for the global struggle toward the realization of Full Freedom and the movement of Truth and Justice over the systemic exploitation of the people and our planet. Returning once again to dazzle the Cali-Roots audience is Eli-Mac. Since her American Idol story took the world by storm, Eli-Mac has gone on to tour with acts like Lauren Hill, Shaggy and SOJA. Eli-Mac has received critical praise with her recent song “Roots Girl,” a collaboration with Cali Roots artist Nattali Rize and Paula Fuga.

There are a handful of women artists making their Cali Roots debut this year! Included is the fast rising Vana Liya. Vana Liya is a New York native who grew up surrounded by soca, calypso, dancehall and reggae music. She is currently signed to LAW Records. Sa-Roc is the critically acclaimed Atlanta based hip-hop artist currently signed to Rhymesayers. She is best known for her lyrical prowess dealing with themes of social awareness and personal experience. Lila Iké is a Jamaican singer and songwriter who fuses contemporary reggae with soul, hip-hop and dancehall. Joining Lila Iké on stage is Sevena who will be performing alongside Protoje at Cali Roots. Sevena is the Jamaican singer, actress and model currently signed to In.Digg.Nation whose sultry vocals won over fans and audiences alike on her recent NPR Tiny Desk performance. Another artist making their debut at Cali Roots is Artikal Sound System. The Delray Beach, Florida band is led by the fierce front woman Logan Rex, blending roots and modern sounds with Logan’s jazzy and soulful vocals.

Leading the Operations team of Cali Roots is Amy Sheehan who oversees all festival logistics; from marketing to production to HR. She is the glue that keeps the team together, connecting the pieces between artists, ticketing, marketing, and so much more. She works closely with Ana Elizabeth who heads up artist relations, and connects often with Lauren Langone head of hospitality. Keisha Murray coordinates the artist transportation team and Jayashri Triolo has been promoted this year to Stage Manager, overseeing a team of stage hands and working directly with sound and light crews to keep a tight stage schedule.

Lindsay Freedman manages over 100 volunteers for the festival, everything from recruitment to training. Every staffer is thankful for Brandalyn Raymond, who is Supply Depot Manager, in charge of getting supplies to all the teams. Katie Hovis has recently been promoted to Operations Manager, overseeing so many logistical moving parts. Front of house, you can find Meesh Baraga watching over the entrances as head of the front gates, Emily Tanzer as our Box Office Manager and Katie Wilson managing all Festival Merchandise from design conception to sales. Dana Greer leads the in-house media team through social media, managing talented photographers and bloggers through compelling content. The above mentioned is only a sample of the 50 plus other women who make the festival run so smoothly.

Amy Sheehan has also been a pivotal part of Cali Roots’ reputation for putting on an impressive “green” and environmentally conscious event. She states, “Cali Roots has paved its own unique way in the festival circuit, leading by example on how our event can do more than just entertain. Cali Roots’ ethos is to reduce our impact on the environment by aligning with other like-minded organizations, making earth-wise choices regarding the products purchased, promoting environmental awareness to fans, staff & artists, and continuing to set the bar higher each year in our commitment to sustainability. Every year we continue to find new ways to stand out and make a difference and so much credit is due to the women leaders on our staff. I am proud to be surrounded by such a passionate and talented community of women.”
