Steve Forbert’s latest cover and accompanying video of the Grateful Dead’s “Box of Rain” is a timely release considering our shared experience surrounding COVID-19. This monumental song originated with one of the Dead’s founding members, Phil Lesh, composing the music, while Robert ‘Bob’ Hunter wrote the lyrics. Lesh came to identify the song with his dying father. He would practice singing as he drove to the hospital and later the nursing home. Death surrounds us.
Week Eight of A Concert A Day is here and North Carolina is giving us three of the best artists they have to offer, with honky tonk-infused Appalachian Bluegrass pickers Town Mountain, acclaimed roots duo Mandolin Orange, and folk rock water diviners Hiss Golden Messenger each representing the Tar Heel State on Pickathon stages Monday, Friday, and Saturday respectively. We’ll also see art pop expressionist Ezra Furman, South Carolina Americana mainstays Shovels & Rope, and Swedish post-punk fusion reactors Viagra Boys in their 2019 Galaxy Barn performance.
The String Cheese Incident have released their first new music of 2020. The new single - “Top Down” was a collaborative effort between two Colorado-based bands, The String Cheese Incident and SunSquabi. The track premiered exclusively via This Song is Sick earlier this week.
Canadian ball-of-fire beacon of the blues scene Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne is set to add to his stack of multi-award-winning albums with the release of Go, Just Do It! — available June 12, 2020 via Stony Plain Records.
