Legendary banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck is set to embark on a groundbreaking new collaboration with acclaimed musicians Edmar Castañeda and Antonio Sanchez. The trio, an exciting fusion of banjo, harp, and drums, will take the stage at the iconic Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City for a weeklong residency, from September 10th to September 15th, 2024. Each evening will feature two performances, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience this innovative and dynamic combination of sounds.
Fleck, a musician known for his boundary-pushing explorations of the banjo, expressed his excitement about the new project: “I am so excited to see what happens next in this new combination with two musicians I am thoroughly in awe of. I love playing with folks that have a lot to teach me, and this is certainly one of those times. We have already begun building our collaboration and my take is that we are on to something truly unique.”
The trio’s residency at Blue Note will be followed by a performance at the FreshGrass Festival in North Adams, MA, on September 21st, 2024. This marks another significant milestone in what promises to be an extraordinary musical journey.
Fleck’s work continues to receive critical acclaim, as evidenced by his recent nominations for the 2024 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards. His piece “Rhapsody in Blue(grass)” has been nominated for Instrumental Recording of the Year, and he is once again in the running for Banjo Player of the Year. Additionally, Fleck has been nominated for Collaborative Recording of the Year as a producer for “Brown's Ferry Blues.” These nominations underscore Fleck’s ongoing influence and innovation in the world of music.
