Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Katie Pruitt’s new holiday song, “Merry Christmas Mary Jane,” is out today. Watch/share the official music video, directed by Bella Mazzola, HERE.
Reflecting on the song, Pruitt shares, “‘Merry Christmas Mary Jane’ is the quintessential holiday song for stoners. The holidays can be stressful and when the eggnog isn’t strong enough, sometimes we need a little extra help lifting our spirits. I wrote this song on Christmas Eve after dealing with some family drama. I was stressed and fresh out of weed, so my best friend picked me up and we drove around the neighborhood hot boxing his red Ford Explorer. Sometimes all you need to get through the holidays is a friend to talk to and a strong strain of Mary Jane.”
In conjunction with the release, Pruitt has partnered with Nashville’s LabCanna for a limited-edition line of “Merry Christmas Mary Jane” Delta-8 gummies, which will be available for purchase at her show at Nashville’s Basement East on December 16.
The new song adds to a series of breakout years for Pruitt, who is currently in the midst of an extensive headline tour with upcoming performances at New York’s Mercury Lounge, Philadelphia’s MilkBoy, Boston’s Brighton Music Hall, Evanston’s Space, Lexington’s The Burl, Atlanta’s The Earl and Nashville’s Basement East among many others. See below for complete itinerary. Ticket details can be found at www.katiepruitt.com/tour.
Moreover, Pruitt recently launched her new podcast, “The Recovering Catholic” via Osiris Media. With new episodes debuting every other week, “The Recovering Catholic” explores the idea of God from a variety of perspectives as Pruitt attempts to discover a new spiritual identity. In each installment, Pruitt and her guests discuss reconciling religious upbringing with personal truth and what it means to be spiritual in the modern age. Listen to the first four episodes, featuring special guests Ruston Kelly, Julien Baker and Semler, via Osiris, Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
The podcast follows Pruitt’s widely acclaimed debut album, Expectations, which was released last year on Rounder Records (stream/purchase here). Co-produced by Pruitt and her close friend Mike Robinson, Expectations consists of ten new songs written solely by Pruitt and debuted to overwhelming critical praise..
Originally from the Atlanta suburbs and now based in Nashville, Pruitt has been building to a career breakthrough over the past few years following the release of her OurVinyl Live Session EP in March 2018. Since the release, Pruitt has been highlighted as a Rolling Stone “Artist You Need To Know,” one of NPR Music’s “Slingshot: 20 Artists To Watch In 2019” and Southwest Magazine’s “Artists on the Rise” and has been featured on NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk (Home) Concert” series as well as “CBS This Morning” as part of their Saturday Sessions series.
