King Llama, the LA-based progressive fusion band, is thrilled to announce the release of their eagerly awaited new album fata implexis—a record that redefines the boundaries of genre and takes listeners on a daring, electrifying journey. Produced by the legendary Dennis MacKay, whose illustrious career includes work with David Bowie, Return to Forever, and Stanley Clarke, fata implexis is a masterclass in sonic innovation and collaboration.
Right from the opening track, “Lora Ky,” it’s clear that King Llama has created something extraordinary. The song, penned by guitarist and songwriter Ryan T. Bailey, serves as both a prelude and an on-ramp to an album brimming with spidery guitar riffs, sophisticated changes, and intricate unison lines. The six-track album, including the epic 11-minute “Sir Isaac,” showcases the band's ability to transcend genre conventions, blending elements of prog rock, post-fusion, and even math rock into a sound that defies categorization.
“It’s a new era for us,” says drummer Luis Briones. “We’ve been around for over 12 years, but we've evolved. This new album is more produced, with featured players, multiple guitar lines, some strings, and other elements that push our music into new territories.”
The album’s evolution began during the pandemic, when Bailey and Briones found themselves rethinking and expanding the band’s vision. This period of intense creativity led to the partnership with MacKay, who Bailey met through record executive Michael Caplan. MacKay, whose work with artists like Brand X inspired Bailey, brought a polished production sensibility to the album, introducing melodic hooks and pop sensibilities to King Llama’s complex musical landscape.
MacKay reflects on the creative freedom he experienced working with the band: “They're younger and more experimental. They told me ‘do whatever you want to do,’ and they literally meant that. It was a dream come true.”
The album also features contributions from an all-star cast of musicians, including Brand X bassist Percy Jones, whose fretless bass enriches the atmospheric closing track “Vita et Mors,” and Anthony Crawford, whose bass work provides a firm foundation throughout the album.
With fata implexis, King Llama has crafted a musical narrative that intertwines fate and destiny, both in its thematic content and in the collaborative spirit that brought the album to life. Bailey describes the album as a journey of discovery and connection, where the fate of a son and father are intertwined across the universe, mirroring the connections forged between the band and its collaborators.
