In anticipation of their upcoming album release, The Headhunters, the legendary jazz-funk ensemble, will take the stage at The Hamilton Live in Washington, D.C. This special evening of groove and soul will be elevated by the opening act, the brilliant funk/blues guitarist Sol Roots.

The Headhunters: 50 Years of Unstoppable Funk

The Headhunters, co-led by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark alongside NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison, are celebrating over five decades of revolutionizing jazz and funk. Having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic 1970s albums Head Hunters, Thrust, and Man-Child, the group has evolved into a global phenomenon, fusing jazz, funk, and rock to inspire musicians across genres and generations. Their music has sold millions of records worldwide and has been sampled by countless hip-hop artists.

In 2023, The Headhunters celebrated their 50th anniversary, and in 2024, they will release their highly anticipated new album, The Stunt Man, on Ropeadope Records, recorded at the legendary Hyde Street Studios. The band’s illustrious history continues with this exciting release, and they remain as innovative and fresh as ever.

"The Headhunters is an act of passion, of love for humanity, and for our planet," says Mike Clark. "We’re not musicians, we are physicians. We heal people," adds Bill Summers.

The current lineup includes bassist Chris Severin and pianist Kyle Roussel, both mainstays of the New Orleans music scene, solidifying The Headhunters' reputation as one of the most dynamic and innovative live acts in the world.

Sol Roots: A Fiery Blend of Funk, Blues, and Soul

Opening the night is none other than the dynamic funk and blues guitarist Sol Roots, whose New Orleans-influenced rhythms and deep blues guitar work have earned him a reputation for electrifying live performances. Sol has shared the stage with musical legends such as Jon Cleary, Soulive, The Wood Brothers, and many more. His signature blend of soulful rock and hypnotic funk is the perfect complement to The Headhunters' iconic grooves.

The September 11th performance will feature Sol’s band, which includes musicians who have worked with Taj Mahal, Prince, and Chuck Brown, bringing an extra layer of excitement to the night.

With a career steeped in the deep traditions of American music and a vision for blending these roots with contemporary influences, Sol Roots promises to deliver a powerful, soulful experience.
