Vermont-based fiddle composer and songwriter Lissa Schneckenburger turned the challenges of the first year of the pandemic into a deeply creative time, resulting in her latest album, “Falling Forward.” Released in March 2023, this album is a testament to her resilience and creativity during a period when her touring schedule came to a halt.
“When everything shut down, writing music became an essential outlet,” Schneckenburger explains. “I had to write music to process my experience of living through such a difficult time. It was my lifeline.” This burst of creativity led to what she jokingly calls “overflowing bucketfuls of music,” providing enough material for several albums.
Star-Powered Collaboration
“Falling Forward” was recorded in December 2022 with an all-female ensemble of renowned musicians. The star-studded lineup includes fiddling producer Katie McNally, pianist Rachel Aucoin, bass player Mali Obomsawin, cellist Natalie Haas, and accordion player Karen Tweed. “These women are my heroes,” Schneckenburger says. “They are leaders in the acoustic music world, and it was such an honor to record with them.”
The album features Schneckenburger’s original fiddle tunes and two traditional New England songs, ranging from lively, riotous tunes to somber, introspective pieces. The music reflects the tone of a vibrant fiddle party with floorboards thumping and bow hair flying, offering both meditative and liberating experiences, appropriate for processing our collective societal experience over the past few years.
A Blend of Tradition and Originality
For decades, Schneckenburger has showcased her versatility, from traditional dance tunes to original songs inspired by her experience as a foster and adoptive parent. “Falling Forward” blends her love of traditional music with her songwriting prowess in her first fiddle-forward album release in over a decade. Esteemed musician Emerald Rae praises, “Lissa’s playing creeps up on you, and then you’re hooked – this new album is no different. Her vocals are heart-felt and truly gorgeous.”
