Over the last half-decade, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Mason Via has ridden a wave of successes—a long stint as the youngest member of the Grammy-nominated Old Crow Medicine Show, and a songwriter on Molly Tuttle’s Grammy-winning album City of Gold and Del McCoury Band’s Grammy-nominated album Almost Proud—all while making the time to write and record his debut album New Horizons which was championed by the likes of NPR and The Oxford American. But Via’s latest output comes from a time before it all kicked off for him.
With its acoustic arrangements and top-shelf flatpicking, Via’s upcoming album, simply titled Mason Via, was inspired by the music he heard as a child in Appalachia, raised in two mountain towns that straddled the Virginia/North Carolina border. One parent lived in Danbury, North Carolina, and the other lived in Patrick County, Virginia. Via spent time in both homes, absorbing the musical traditions of an area that hosted fiddlers conventions, banjo competitions, and campfire jams. Mason Via is a grand return to his bluegrass-centric roots, gaining a new perspective on his Appalachian musical upbringing after touring the country a few times.
Today, along with announcing his new album, Via released a brand new single, “There Goes Another One,” a tire-squealing, adrenaline-pumping run from the law co-written by Via and Christian Ward. The song kicks off at a burning pace with a crying dobro leading into Via’s story setup:
“Broke down out on a run again
Far cry from where I belong
Hard times sirens running round the bend
The police is coming and they don’t know right from wrong
Somehow I got that engine turned over
Rev her up now we’re having some fun
Them blue lights can’t get any closer
I leave them in the dust saying there goes another one”
When all is said and done, the only thing left standing is the desire to replay “There Goes Another One” to catch more little bits of Via’s songcraft and vocal delivery at a breakneck pace.
