Sierra Hull’s “Come Out Of My Blues” Is A Collaborative View On A Post-Storm Blue Sky

Artistic curiosity drives Sierra Hull’s creative spirit. The singer, songwriter, and award-winning mandolinist constantly finds herself on stages and in recording studios with artists from her world of bluegrass music and well beyond—recently Hull and her band joined Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds in Mexico for a string band version of “Ants Marching”—and her new single, “Come Out of My Blues” was born of the same curious ilk.

“Having been a John Prine fan for many years, and loving many of the songs he wrote with Pat McLaughlin throughout his career, I thought it would be fun to write with Pat,” says Hull of the song’s beginnings. The pair sat down with one of McLaughlin’s ideas, Hull already in love with the conversational nature of the song’s early lyrics. And they wrote “Come Out Of My Blues.” But Hull’s knack for digging around for the exact right sound evolved the pairs new song. “One day I was changing mandolin strings and found myself playing around with a weird tuning and wished I had something to sing over the melody I was playing,” she remembers. Pulling up the lyrics from her writing session with McLaughlin, Hull began experimenting with her new idea on the already-written song.

“With Pat’s permission, I modified our song to fit a new melody that leans into a more experimental old time sound with split-tuned mandolin and claw hammer banjo.” With some Sierra Hull magic, the new arrangement perfectly matched the joyfulness of their original lyrics, celebrating the feeling when, in her words, “you’re starting to come out of a period of sadness only to notice the small, beautiful things around you like birds singing.” Speaking of birds singing, Hull invited one of her all-time favorite singers, and a legendary voice in the bluegrass and Americana world, Tim O’Brien, to join in the fun on “Come Out Of My Blues.” “Sierra is fleet-fingered and full throttle on this one,” says O’Brien. “I kind of ducked my head down under the wind and held on,” he laughs. Every curious turn and addition yielded a masterfully composed and exquisitely performed treat for music fans of all backgrounds and ages.

“Come Out Of My Blues” is the latest single from Hull’s upcoming album, A Tip Toe High Wire, out March 7th. Self-produced with longtime friend and engineer Shani Gandhi, A Tip Toe High Wire is not only Hull’s first album in five years and the first to feature her skilled and seasoned touring band—Shaun Richardson (guitar), Avery Merritt (fiddle), Erik Coveney (bass), and Mark Raudabaugh (drums)—but it’s also her first album to be released independently. “In some ways, it feels like stepping out into a different territory,” Hull says. “And leaning into that at this chapter of my career—the freedom of being able to be out on my own, to create with no walls for what feels like the first time—has helped me grow.” Cultivating some of the finest pickers and singers in Nashville and beyond, A Tip Toe High Wire features guest appearances by Béla Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Aoife O’Donovan, Justin Moses, Lindsay Lou, Ronnie Bowman, and more with Hull’s touring band providing a steadfast foundation throughout.
