Veterans of Asheville’s psychedelic music scene, The Snozzberries have announced the release of the first single off their upcoming self-titled album — Return. Written on a cold winter solstice by guitarist and vocalist Ethan Heller, the song carried an original meaning of coming out of bleak darkness to find warmth and light. After the passing of the band’s original drummer, the song took on a new meaning for Heller.
“It took on a new personal connection,” Heller said. “After going through all of those emotions,we were finally able to find a light at the end of a dark tunnel of grief. It was coming back to ourselves, but in a new place, and I think that’s why the song is so powerful.”
Beginning with a vigorous rock introduction, Return flows into a celestial, meditative piano break. The track builds to a jarring drop, where the band expertly melds trip-hop and space rock, before circling back to its original theme for the finale.
While Return plays to the hard-edge prog rock sound many fans associate with The Snozzberries, listeners can expect the unexpected from the album’s upcoming singles. “We will always have our unique ‘Snozz’ sound,” Heller said. “The songs throughout the record shift from psych rock to indie-pop to prog rock. This particular single embraces the roots of our sound.”
The Snozzberries have been hard at work honing in their distinct brand of art rock over the last few years. With the addition of Josh Clark and Paul Gladstone, the band’s sound is more polished than ever before. “When Ian [Taylor] and I started this band, it was just a fun, jammy outlet for us. Watching the evolution into what we’re doing now is pretty mind-blowing.”
With the release of Return as the band’s first single with a fresh lineup demonstrates the song’s message of coming back to their passion with a lust for life and music. Each of the band’s members — Josh Clark, Paul Gladstone, Ethan Heller, and Ian Taylor — contribute diverse value and unique styles that harmoniously mesh into The Snozzberries’ unparalleled flavor of music. Similarly, each song on their upcoming self-titled album has its own distinct vibe, yet are thematically tied together in a display of musical cohesion.
Recorded at The Eagle Room in Asheville and mastered by Matt Williams, locally dubbed as ‘The Wizard of Weaverville’, Snozz fans can find Return streaming on platforms including Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, Apple Music, and more beginning August 16. The record’s hand-drawn cover art by Magic Art Club will also be revealed on August 16. Listeners are invited to visit TheSnozzberriesMusic.com to hear Return, eye new artwork, and preorder vinyls.
