About TheBigWonderful’s Zero Waste Initiative

TheBigWonderful is committed to and proud to be one of the most sustainable festivals in the Mile High City. Beginning in 2014, TheBigWonderful initiated composting at their events. The following season, TheBigWonderful welcomed Lyndsey Manderson, owner of Zero Market, to host her first shop and help build the sustainability program further. Lyndsey now has a brick and mortar location in Stanley Marketplace featuring local, organic and toxin-free goods for your everyday sustainable life.

In 2017, TheBigWonderful continued to grow their Zero Waste program with a new and current partnership with Scraps to make the festivals more waste-free than ever. For all events in 2018 and beyond, TBW has asked their vendors to take a sustainability pledge, requiring all TBW food trucks and bars to use compostable items, with Scraps and their locally manufactured “bicycle vehicles” on hand to sort, weigh, compost and recycle. These initiatives have diverted more than 16,000 pounds of recycling and compost from landfills in the past two seasons alone, with 90% of TBW’s dumpsters being compost and recycling material. TheBigWonderful looks forward to continuing to build and grow the sustainability program in 2018 and beyond, remaining committed to being Denver’s most environmentally responsible local market.

Christi Turner, founder of Scraps, explains, “We're committed to changing the way large events impact our environment and our community. In just two seasons with TheBigWonderful, together we've already shown that zero-waste events are feasible, engaging to the public, and profitable. In the process we've kept tons of "waste" out of the landfill, to be recycled or composted instead, and our diversion numbers increase with every event. That means that our positive impact on our climate, our water, our land and our community just keeps growing. We're proud to be setting a new standard for sustainable events with TheBigWonderfu!.”

TheBigWonderful is excited to sponsor a new Scraps trike for even more bike powered trash capabilities in the future.

About Scraps
