Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally have been melding genres their entire careers—bluegrass, folk, country, jazz, swing, alt-roots, folkbilly, you-name-it—but when it came time to put together Western Sun, their third album as the Nell & Jim Band, Robinson and Nunally wed their passion for songwriting and storytelling, using their vocabulary of way-back influences; a story told from the roots of roots music.

In normal times, Steve Kimock and Friends (John Morgan Kimock, drums, Jeff Chimenti, keys, and Reed Mathis, bass) would have returned to Mill Valley’s Sweetwater Music Hall this weekend for a three-night residency.

These are not ordinary times—oh, you noticed?—and so Steve & Co. decided to release a mini-EP, Point of No Return.  Here’s what Steve says about the EP.

Long-time festival favorites and jam-grass pioneers Yonder Mountain String Band have joined forces with JamBase to present Yonder May—a weekly video broadcast of YMSB sets from the 1990s and early 2000s, culled from the band’s personal, fan-gifted VHS tape collection and hand-edited (yes, painstakingly cut and spliced, remember that?) and digitized by guitarist and founding member Adam Aijala. Airing every Thursday in May at 4:20 pm EDT, Yonder May will raise funds to support the entire YMSB team while not on tour via a “virtual tip jar” for Venmo and Paypal donations.

Without question it has been a rough few months, but things are turning around. Kory Quinn & Co. released their new record, “The Blueroom.” See; it is a very promising start to May. Quinn’s music is absolutely spellbinding. His vocals are seasoned and solid yet still tender. The entire band have a breathtaking command over the genre. It’s as if they have been playing together for the past fifty years. Even as they tackle gritty subject matter, there is a free-spiritedness in the music.
