UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue kicked off the U.S. leg of a major world tour at Concord Music Hall in Chicago last month.
Concord Music Hall Chicago
The three founding members of the original UB40 (established in Birmingham, England in 1978) have added their names to the marquee to let the world know they’re ready to take care of business.
Frontman Ali Campbell, toaster Astro, and keyboardist Mickey Virtue re-ignited the best of UB40’s vast catalog with an 8-piece backing band that included saxophone, trombone and trumpet. They turned the 1500-capacity venue into an intimate, Saturday night blues party for the lovers rock crowd. The reggae hit makers opened with their smash version of Al Green’s “Here I Am (Come and Take Me)” and often overlooked original “Homely Girl,” both from the 1989 release Labour of Love II.
Diehard fans were thrilled to hear “Cherry Oh Baby” from Labour of Love (1983), “One in Ten” from Present Arms (1981), and “Rat in Mi Kitchen” (1986) in the middle of the show. The audience embraced new songs “Cyber Bully Boys” and “Silhouette” from Ali Campbell’s 2014 solo release Silhouette: The Legendary Voice of UB40 that sparked the group’s reformation. Set closers “Many Rivers to Cross” and “(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You” inspired heartfelt sing-alongs. The kings of reggae pop ended the ultimate date night with a brilliant encore of “Food for Thought,” “Kingston Town” and the much beloved “Red Red Wine.”
