Elder Canadian songsmith, activist, recording artist Bruce Cockburn performs two nights in Chicago during his extended 2017-18 North American tour.
Old Town School of Folk Music Chicago
The first of two sold out nights at Old Town School of Folk's intimate Maurer Hall, Cockburn's show was geared up with arena sized lighting and sound production equipement, a bit overwhelming for the modest sized concert space. But that did not impact his intimate connection with the audience. At 72 he talks and performs to his audience with ease, wit and a certain wisdom that only someone of his age and life experience can do. While performing his hits such as The Gifts and If I had a Rocket Launcher, a good portion of the set were from his most recent release "Bone on Bone", a rootsy collection packed with an unstopable intensity. His tour band was Gary Craig (drums), John Dymond (bass) and John Aaron Cockburn (accordion/guitar).
With the release of his 2014 memoir "Rumors of Glory" and companion CD box set, one might guess he is wraping things up. But judging from his tour schedule and energy on stage, he shows no signs of slowing down.
