Ancient Future, pioneers of world fusion music, are excited to announce the release of their first-ever cover of a popular song, "Purple Haze (Vietnamese Đàn Bầu Style)," on January 10, 2025. This release pays homage to Jimi Hendrix's original recording of "Purple Haze," which began on this same date in 1967. Pre-orders will be available across all major streaming platforms beginning September 18, 2024.

This unique rendition of Hendrix’s iconic track is reimagined with the Vietnamese đàn bầu (monochord with a whammy bar), combining the psychedelic energy of Hendrix’s music with Ancient Future’s signature world fusion style.

Double Release Celebration in February 2025

On February 7, 2025, the tribute continues with the release of "Purple Nam (Glissentar & Đàn Bầu Duet)"—a mesmerizing duet fusing Vietnamese and Indian music influences—paired with "Purple Haze (Vietnamese Đàn Bầu Style)" as a mini-45 digital release. This date commemorates Hendrix’s completion of the original "Purple Haze" recording on February 7, 1967. Pre-orders for the mini-45 begin on October 9, 2024, the anniversary of Ancient Future’s recording session for this project.

For those who pre-order the mini-45, "Purple Haze (Vietnamese Đàn Bầu Style)" will also be available for download on Hendrix's birthday, November 27, 2024, as an instant gratification track on iTunes and Amazon.

Ancient Future’s Connection to Jimi Hendrix

Ancient Future’s leader, Matthew Montfort, was deeply influenced by Hendrix from an early age. When Hendrix passed away on September 18, 1970, Montfort, then just 12 years old, spent the day honoring his hero by playing Hendrix’s music. This emotional connection has continued to inspire his musical journey. Montfort's lifelong exploration of global music traditions, alongside his passion for Hendrix’s revolutionary style, culminates in this captivating reimagining of "Purple Haze."

The project traces its origins to Montfort's experimentation with combining Indian raga techniques and electric blues, which he calls "Purple Raga." The concept was first performed in 2010 with Vietnamese đàn bầu master Bui Huu Nhut during a festival performance that received national attention.
