Dubbing A Thousand Faces - ACT 1 (Beats Antique Records) out today, Tuesday, October 15 their most intensely collaborative effort yet, BEATS ANTIQUE designated a diagram of a hero’s journey as their guide for the initial stages of songwriting and composition—then let their experimental sides take over and flourish as they delved further into the creative process. Their seventh studio album is a unique offering, the first of a two-volume endeavor that encapsulates each stage of Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in an assortment of sweeping and lushly textured tracks.
Breaking down boundaries and defying categorization, this 12-song collection traverses a myriad of styles and soundscapes, forging one hypnotic journey. It finds BEATS ANTIQUE and iconic Primus leader Les Claypool summoning "Beelzebub," merging a tribal bounce with pulsating dance energy and devilishly dynamic playing from Claypool. Look for its video to come soon.
Other guests who join the San Francisco-based trio of musician/producers Tommy Cappel, David Satori, and Zoe Jakes include sarod player Alam Khan (son of legendary classical Indian musician Ali Akbar Khan) on "Kismet," Lynx & Sorne for "You The Starry Eyed" and Micah & Leighton in "Doors of Destiny.”

Meanwhile, the trio is currently on their ‘A Thousand Faces’ tour showcasing their multi-dimensional, custom designed stage show that brings musical and visual storytelling to life using Obscura Digital’s ground-breaking innovations in live performance technologies combined with the creative vision of Director Ivan Landau. The custom fabricated stage set evokes a sense of a mythological village right out of a fairy tale, with hand-crafted little houses. Obscura mapped the entire stage set for an architectural projection experience flowing with optical illusions that transform the physical into the metaphysical. “We wanted to create something that was new, yet nostalgic,” states Ivan Landau. “The visual storytelling comes right off the stage, like a pop-up book, seamlessly blending hand-made artistry with technology.”
Unique content pieces were created of the many art disciplines represented including miniature sets, puppetry, clay animation, 3D animation, painting, illustration, photography and live action. Obscura collaborated to create and integrate the diverse collection of artwork into its projection mapping system. In addition, Obscura designed transition pieces that shift perspectives of the stage set with 3D effects, cubes, fractals, and other illusions. Obscura’s interactive motion tracking software follows the movements of Zoe Jakes with real-time visuals such as particles, masking, and lighting treatments, helping to visually extend her live performance. The band has full control during the show to enable these special effects, adding new dynamic elements from one show to next on the tour.
“Riding a whirlwind of hip-hop, Gypsy jazz, Balkan beat-box, live electronica and whatever else pops into their ever-expanding minds,” wrote the Charlotte edition of Creative Loafing (10/10/13) in their preview of tonight’s show. “…the members of Beats Antique are snaky-hipped guides to the garden of earthly delights, an ethnographic mish-mash for both world music mavens and club kids.”
