Blue Note Jazz Club confirms a select run of shows with New York-based musician Nick Hakim. Kicking off on November 14, the mini-residency marks Hakim’s debut performance at the historic venue. Blue Note continues to carry the torch for culturally relevant musicians into the 21st century by regularly showcasing up-and-coming jazz, soul, R&B and funk artists at the iconic club. Most recently, Blue Note wrapped their overwhelmingly successful 12th Annual Blue Note Jazz Festival, featuring a host of artists performing at venues across the city. The diverse and legendary lineup included performances by Grace Jones, Pat Metheny, NxWorries (Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge), Robert Glasper, BJ The Chicago Kid and Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, as well as a stop on legendary blues guitarist and singer Buddy Guy’s Damn Right Farewell Tour.

In 2017, Hakim’s debut album the lauded Green Twins announced the singer-songwriter as an idiosyncratic talent, making music that resists genre classification. You could work a song of his into an HBO original series, as Insecure did; you could smoke to it and wonder about your ego; you could slow dance with the person you love-it’s not versatility, so much as a lack of boundaries and a strong sense of intuition. It drew on the music Hakim listened to growing up in Washington, D.C. with his older brother and parents who emigrated to the United States from Peru: American soul music and political folk from South America.
Last year, Hakim released his third studio album Cometa to widespread critical praise; NPR proclaimed, “Cometa leans all the way into his progression, using the warped dimensions of his songcraft to enter a space where a moment lasts a lifetime,” while The FADER calls it “intensely urgent.”
