Today Candid records has released Sardinia, a previously unreleased live recording of Chick Corea performing with Orchestra da Camera della Sardegna in Sardinia, Italy. Recorded in 2018 under the direction of conductor Simone Pittau, the album features Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24, and George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody In Blue.” Sardinia is currently available to order here.
The recording is a new addition to the immense legacy of the legendary composer and pianist. Corea’s unique vision of a classical performance and his distinctive approach adds a touch of playfulness to the proceedings, while still upholding the integrity and reverence for the music. With the Mozart piece, Corea takes liberties and inserts flourishes as one might imagine Mozart may have done in his time. “Rhapsody in Blue” was a highlight of the evening. The performance captures what Corea discovered was George Gershwin's intended spirit of the composition, and he brings new life, freedom and improvisation to Gershwin's vision.
Conductor Simone Pittau had a deep connection with Corea. “I grew up listening to his music, fascinated by his projects and bewitched by the creativity of his bands,” he recalls. “A relationship of understanding was born with him as if I had known him forever. There was a constant exchange of musical information between us through the analysis of the scores. He performed Mozart with great taste and a refined touch, at the same level of the top classical soloist. And his version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is of rare beauty. It was and it will always remain in my heart an unforgettable professional and human experience.”
The CD and double LP Vinyl album feature meticulous liner notes from author and historian Robin D.G. Kelly. The album was produced by Corea with long-time collaborator Bernie Kirsh.
