Veteran LA bass player Derek Frank takes a detour from his usual duties backing up major pop stars and presents us with his disco-fied new instrumental single, “Goin’ Stagg.”
Recently recorded with his touring band at Stagg Street Studios in Los Angeles, “Goin’ Stagg” is an infectious instrumental journey that blends sinewy thumps and jazz with retro disco and funk elements, creating an irresistible groove that transports listeners to the dance floor. With a vibrant horn arrangement and a tightly doubled bass and Clavinet line, each note pulses with energy, drawing inspiration from classic funk and disco while incorporating modern jazz improvisation. The track's dynamic shifts and playful melody showcase the musicians' virtuosity, capturing the essence of celebration.
As a solo artist, Derek Frank has released three critically acclaimed albums: Let the Games Begin (2009), Eleven Years Later (2020), and Origin Story (2024). He has built a stellar reputation as a touring bassist, playing for global icons such as Shania Twain, Gwen Stefani, Air Supply, Shakira, and Kelly Clarkson. Despite his busy schedule backing A-list artists, Frank has cultivated his own distinctive musical voice, inspired by the soundtrack of his 1970s and 1980s childhood.
Derek and his handpicked five- to seven-piece band craft an eclectic mix of funk, blues, soul, jazz, and Southern rock, channeling the feel of vintage soundtrack music. His compositions are defined by tight arrangements, slinky grooves, and a deep sense of musical interplay that prioritizes taste and feel over flashy technique.
Frank’s solo work has earned praise from Bass Magazine, Guitar World Magazine, American Songwriter Magazine, Bass Player Magazine, Music Connection Magazine, and podcasts such as Everyone Loves Guitar and The Bass Shed. Additionally, he received a Hollywood Independent Music Award nomination for Best Instrumental Song. His work has drawn comparisons to Lettuce, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong, Snarky Puppy, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Karl Denson, and John Scofield.
Growing up in Pittsburgh, Frank’s passion for music was sparked by the TV shows, movies, and MTV culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s. His love for bass emerged unexpectedly when he picked up the instrument at a music store while waiting for a guitar lesson. That moment launched a lifelong career that would take him to Los Angeles, where he became one of the city’s most sought-after touring and session bassists.
With “Goin’ Stagg,” Frank once again showcases his prowess as a bandleader and solo artist, delivering a track that embodies the best of funk, jazz, and disco. The single drops May 28 on all streaming platforms.
