With every element of her brand new album When The Trouble’s All Done, Ellie Turner took great care to retain a specific presentation of her songs. “I wanted it real and imperfect,” she remembers. “I wanted it honest. I wanted it stripped down to the core and essence of whatever it was.” Most of the tracks feature just acoustic guitars, upright bass, and vocals performed live to tape at Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville. “This was a very conscious decision made by myself and my producer, Jack Schneider,” says Turner. “We would play the song live until we felt like the most honest version of the song had been performed and captured.”
Of course, Turner and Schneider’s way of recording only really lands if the songs stand up on their own, and in this case, Turner has presented a ten-song collection of beautiful, lilting, timeless folk songs. And, save for one cover of Bob Dylan’s “Oh, Sister,” are all original compositions by Turner or co-written with Schneider. A stunning debut album, When The Trouble’s All Done feels like Turner’s tribute to the folk music that changed her life back in college. “It filled me up like nothing else ever had,” she remembers. “I couldn’t get enough.” But in reality, Turner has added new pages to the great folk songbook with When The Trouble’s All Done.
