“Salted Watermelon” is off the latest Taylor Scott Band album All We Have, produced by multi Grammy Award winner and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame nominee Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.
The album continues to stay in the top 100 on the Americana charts and in his home state, Colorado, sitting comfortably at #2 on the Roots Music chart right in between the Lumineers and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats. With this album, Taylors found the precise formula for a sound that is all his own, mixing his blues, soul, rock and R&B influences, into an incredible body of work that showcases his impressive guitar chops and thoughtful, yet complex songwriting. He has been wowing audiences all over the country, holding his own with some of his heroes (Los Lobos, Buddy Guy, Dave Alvin, Jimmy Gilmore), yet found the time to make a stop at the Bear Creek Distillery to record some incredible live versions of some off the album including “Salted Watermelon,” which we are debuting here. "This tune is about being a weirdo and not caring very much about what other people think of you.,” says Scott. "I was born in St. Louis, where my mom had lived her whole life. When I was a kid, she showed me the delightfully flavor-augmenting "salt on watermelon" trick. We later moved to Wyoming where nobody did any such thing to their watermelon. This was one of the many things that, right off the bat, made me a "weird kid" in my new hometown. I had this on my mind when I wrote that first line, which sparked a song about free-spiritedness and being okay with possibly seeming a little "off" to some. I still think of my mom putting up with my many odd quirks and behaviors growing up every time I kick off this tune.”
"I always liked the idea of doing recording sessions and intimate shows in special, unusual, and familiar places,” said Scott when asked about recoding these live sessions at the distillery. "When we decided to do that this year, Bear Creek Distillery near my home in Denver was the obvious choice for me." I walked into Bear Creek Distillery four years ago and knew immediately that it would be my “place” for however long I lived in Denver. Since then, it’s been my go-to spot to see friends, meet new and interesting people, enjoy some of the absolute best spirits in the Rockies, and just unwind. Bear Creek, so familiar and comfortable to me, was the perfect setting to combine performance with relaxation and share our songs in stripped-down acoustic form. The result was a very personal and intimate performance - imperfect, nuanced, and surrounded by friends - that I won’t forget anytime soon."
