A Jason Isbell record has always been a keenly awaited event, not merely a collection of songs, but an event that speaks to its audience. His latest offering, "Weathervanes," carries with it a transformative, revelatory power that affirms Isbell’s status as a master storyteller at the zenith of his abilities. His songs, observations from a wanderer, condense the universe into four-minute tales that both observe and seek to understand humanity and the world at large.
Isbell reflects, “There is something about boundaries on this record. As you mature, you continue to strive to maintain the capability to love someone fully and completely while morphing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”
"Weathervanes" is an anthology of mature songs. It narrates tales of adult love, transformation, the perils of nostalgia, the examination of myths, and explores themes of cruelty, remorse, and salvation. Some tracks will tug at your heartstrings when you're alone in your car, while others will get you singing along with a crowd of thousands in a massive summer pavilion, reveling in the incredible spectacle of life.
The album reverberates with the robust, rolling thunder of Isbell’s formidable 400 Unit. They’ve rightfully claimed their space in the rock 'n' roll universe beside the most iconic backing bands, becoming as vital and integral to the storytelling as The E Street Band or the Wailers.
Isbell values the expansive noise they create and feels at ease allowing them to be a principal medium through which the world hears his art. On stage with the 400 Unit, Isbell seamlessly transitions between roles: a guitar hero, a conductor, and a jubilant fan of his bandmates, basking in the sound they produce collectively.
The seeds of "Weathervanes" were sown amidst the solitude of the pandemic and during Isbell’s time on set as an actor for Martin Scorsese’s "Killers of the Flower Moon". This environment — punctuated with guitars in his trailer and plenty of moments for reflection — led to the creation of the melancholic yet uplifting track “King of Oklahoma.” Observing Scorsese, Isbell absorbed lessons about the synergy between a clear vision and its realization, and more crucially, how even a figure as accomplished as Scorsese valued and utilized the input of his colleagues.
Isbell notes, “It definitely aided when I entered the studio. I was endowed with this rejuvenated sense of collaboration. You can have an idea, execute it, not compromise — and still listen to the other people in the room.”
