Are You Loathsome Tonight?/ Weeping Willow will be available on very limited edition 7" vinyl (just a handful of copies individually cut on a lathe) and download.
With Robert Paul (Severed Limb) on vocals and guitar, and Sophie Loyer (Urban Voodoo Machine) on violin, Les Saules Pleureurs play a mixture of alt-country, Cajun and western swing. Sam Soper joined them for the session, augmenting the sound with luscious lap-steel guitar.
Recorded straight to quarter inch tape by Marco Nelson (Paul Weller, Primal Scream) at his all-analogue studio in Brixton, London their debut release captures the intimacy and honesty at the heart of the songs.
"These are very simple, open songs," says Robert Paul. "Written, hopefully, in the tradition of Hank Williams or even Gram Parsons. We wanted to record them in an honest way. One take, with everyone playing at once. No overdubs. We're trying to connect to people and we didn't want technology to get in the way."
This level of intimacy is even carried into the production of the records, with only a handful being produced, each one individually cut on a lathe in real-time.
