A week before dawning her Pink Pussy Hat and marching with millions of women from all around the world, Monica Pasqual wrote and recorded a rousing protest song "You Can't Kill Light," created a video and released it on Facebook the day of the inauguration. By the time she arrived at the Oakland Women's March on Saturday (January 22, 2017) morning, thousands of people had already watched the video and local Bay Area radio shows picked it up and played it later that day. "You Can't Kill Light" has quickly garnered over 70,000 views and 1,300 shares on Facebook in less than two weeks.
When asked about the timing, Pasqual says, "Art is inconvenient. I wish I'd written this song a couple of months ago and had the time to get it to some of the organizers of the women's march, but it didn't happen that way. On the Friday before the inauguration, I was sitting around, still feeling hurt about the way the election had gone, and suddenly the words and music started to come to me. I was tired of feeling down, and tired of feeling powerless. I wrote it fast and the next day was in the studio recording it. As soon as I played it for a few people, it was obvious that the song was resonating with them more than anything I've ever done."
Pasqual quickly produced a video to be released by the inauguration. The "You Can't Kill Light" video features archival photographs from a diverse series of protest movements across our country's history. Each verse focuses on a different group that has had to fight for equality and defend against injustice. All who are facing backlashes again: Feminists, African Americans, Immigrants, Native Americans, and LGBTQ.

Please see the lyrics for "You Can't Kill Light" below:
We built a fire
The fire burns bright
You can blow hard
But you can't kill light
We come together
Sometimes we fight
You can knock us down
But you can't kill light
You Can't Kill Light
No you can't kill light
We built a railroad
Out of the past
We nailed down every tie
And we wont go back
High in your tower
Of steel & glass
You can sign the order
But we won't go back
No we won't go back,
we won't go back
We built this house
That we could share
Now you want it for yourself
But we're still here
You think we're different
It makes you scared
So you raise a wall around you
But we're still here
We're still here,
we're still here
We lay the table
We shared our cup
Now you tell us we're not welcome
But we don't give up
We outlast hate
We rise above
You can knock us down
But you can't kill love
You can't kill love,
no you can't kill love
We built a fire
The fire burns bright
You can blow hard
But you can't kill light
We come together
We come to fight
You can knock us down
But you can't kill light
You can't kill light
No, you can't kill light
