New York-based instrumental groove band Planetary People have released their first studio album, Brace for Impact. The record, a dynamic blend of their odyssey-like live compositions and expanded pieces from their acclaimed “Transmissions” project, marks a milestone in the band’s creative journey.
The “Transmissions,” a series of digestible songs born during the COVID-19 pandemic, have evolved into full-length musical statements captured across four seasons of live sessions on YouTube. With Brace for Impact, these once-intimate pieces now take flight alongside the band’s signature live performance-driven sound.
Since crash-landing into their first gig in 2014, Planetary People have set out to create a genre-defying musical experience. Drawing from their diverse backgrounds and musical passions, the band has grown from late-night Chinatown listening hangs and gritty Manhattan venues to a collective that thrives on collaboration and experimentation.
“Our music might fall under the umbrella of ‘jazz,’ but it’s always been about inviting listeners in,” says drummer Josh Bailey. “We want to spark joy, curiosity, and connection through music that’s alive and accessible.”
The Story Behind Brace for Impact
Planetary People’s journey took an unexpected turn during the pandemic, forcing the band to reimagine their creative process. Collaborating over Zoom, the band launched their “Transmissions” series—a weekly project that captured the group’s evolution and resilience in the face of global uncertainty.
“You could hear the band grow live every week,” says saxophonist Jim Piela. “These 64 Transmissions are a powerful tribute to a time that challenged us all in ways we’ll never forget.”
What began as 60-second ideas blossomed into full-fledged songs, enriched with guest artists, Twitch streams, live sets, and even a remote big band collaboration. Working alongside their mentor and renowned producer Luis Bacque, Planetary People transformed these pieces into Brace for Impact.
“We absolutely couldn’t have made this record without Luis,” Piela shares. “It’s the result of countless late nights, early mornings, and an unwavering commitment to bringing our vision to life.”
A Record With Soul
Brace for Impact is more than just another album—it’s a creative manifesto. As Piela puts it, “This album isn’t just a sacrifice to the algorithmic overlords; it’s an album with a soul. It’s a story of hardworking musicians fighting to make something meaningful in a society that prioritizes content over substance.”
From its funky grooves to its heartfelt melodies, Brace for Impact showcases the power of collective creativity at its finest.
