Tommy Prine Forges A Path Of His Own With Debut Album This Far South

It took a while for Tommy Prine to share the songs he’d been writing about the triumphs and tragedies of this life, only letting friends in on what he was quietly creating. Fortunately, two of those friends-turned-collaborators, Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson, were enthralled with what they were hearing. Kelly and Johnson called Prine and urged him to quit his job, get in the studio, and share his music with the world. Today, Prine released his debut album This Far South to a swath of hard-won fanfare and critical acclaim.

This Far South—produced by Kelly and Johnson—is Prine’s emotionally complex but universally accessible debut that sonically brings together a colorful patchwork of musical influences and lyrically explores existential questions and emotional experiences. Prine grew up in Nashville surrounded by music, art, and writing—and it’s certainly no secret that he learned to play guitar by watching his late father, John, picking his own beloved tunes—but summers spent in his mother’s homeland of Ireland lent their own inspiration and ten straight years camping at Bonnaroo introduced Prine to a swath of music not belonging under the greater Americana umbrella. In a way, what makes Prine’s own music so special is how he’s navigated life and creativity apart from his family’s name.

Prine is taking his new music on the road this summer for his This Far South Tour. Kicking off June 30th in Atlanta, the tour’s Southeast and Midwest leg runs until August when Prine crosses the pond for a string of shows in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The second leg of the tour finds Prine hitting both coasts in October. A full list of tour dates can be found below or at tommyprine.com/tour.

This Far South In The News:

“When listeners drop a needle on the new tunes from this budding artist, they’ll hear a collection of songs about love, loss, and life in between that Prine can wholly call his own.” - USA Today

“Given the shadow that looms over anyone named Prine who dares to try his hand at creating original music, listeners would do well to imagine how they would respond if they didn’t know this album came from the son of a legend. It’s possible, maybe even likely, that Prine’s music will find a whole new audience, on social media, and in other ways, music passes from hand to hand these days. Some listeners his age and younger may never have heard of his father, but these songs will make connections on their own.” - Associated Press
