Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats performs a 90 minute sold out late night Lollapalooza after party set for a fanatic crowd.
Thalia Hall
America roots-soul music is alive and well if Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are any indication of this generation's sensibilities. The Stax recording artist stormed the stage for a 90 minute musical celebration. Starting at midnight after downtown's Lollapalooza ended for the evening, fans where not necessarily festival goers, but ardent fans. Opening up with the single 'I Need Never Get Old' set the mood for the evening. This radio hit demonstrates that signature Stax's back beat akin to Booker T & The MGs 'I Can't Turn You Loose'. 'Howling at Nothing' is a nod to Sam Cooke's 'Good Times'. But the hit 'S.O.B.' raised the house to into a gospel-like groove. The 2/4 signature clapping and backing-vocals-hums magically counters Nathaniel's acapella testament. The song simply stur the soul. 'Wasting Time' starts off with finger-picking chord progression then slide guitar colors the sound. Notabily the melody has all the familiarity akin to The Band. Playing material mostly from the 2015 self-titled release, the music was solid and the performance is deserving of an enduring career.
