Tal Wilkenfeld played The Belly Up Thursday, October 5th for a powerful live set. One of a handful of west coast dates, she is wrapping up this tour in Vancouver, B.C. on October 13th.
The Belly Up Solana Beach, CA.
This 29 year old Australian bassist had already proven her musical genius for years having played, and/or toured with damn near everyone from Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy and Chick Corea to The Who, Mick Jagger and Dweezil Zappa. She is a musician's musician who stops the greatest dead in their tracks. So this quickly explains why the crowd of diehard fans were riveted from beginning to end. Mixing up the set with new material from here second solo effort Corner Painter released earlier this year with covers so uniquely arranged and performed it takes a moment to recognize.
Tal Wilkenfeld's bass attack is reminiscent of Michael Manring or Stanley Clarke yet distinctly her own. Maybe it is her ability to traverse between jazz, blues and rock with equal commend. Whatever the case, watching her master the fret board combined with her arrangements is magic. If you get a chance to see her live, do it.
