Friday, September 30th, Los Angeles was treated to Thievery Corporation at The Greek Theater as they celebrates their 20th anniversary. For wildly enthusiastic fans, the non stop dance grooves made for a perfect evening. The venue pulsated between the stage and the audience.
The Greek Theater, Los Angeles, CA.
The Washington DC based duo and founders of Thievery Corporation, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are the creative geniuses who front this ensemble and create a unique musical environment unlike anything on tour. As Thievery Corporation's DNA is from DJ and club music scene, they create a certain hybrid of electronic, world beat, dub, acid jazz, reggae, middle eastern, Indian and more for an unforgettable blend of dance beats and lush melodies. Performing live, they are a stunning spectacle as multiple vocalist cycle through the set bringing a variety of singing styles to each song. All the while bassist Ashish Vyas is a human back-beat in perpetual motion dancing across the stage. Complementing drummer Michael Lowery with additional percussion is Poi Dog Pondering's founder Frank Orrall, who also takes on the role of lead vocalist for one number. What further rounds out the lushness of their music is the two man horn section of trumpet and saxophone.
What is of particular interest and excitement is how their songs are received by the audience as familiar hits as they have built an enduring reputation and loyal fan base absent of radio airplay and mass media coverage. This is an anomaly that makes enduring a twenty year career uniquely special. As their lyrics are often out spoken political messages, this demonstrates a musical force with not-so media friendly songs yet they speak to the people. Their outspoken advocacy goes beyond the songs as they are actively supporting floor relief in Louisiana as well as The World Food Program.
They performed set standards including "Web of Deception", "Radio Retaliation", "Culture of Fear", "33 Degree", Grateful Dead's "Fire on the Mountain", "Vampires" closing with "The Richest Man in Babylon" and fan favorite "Lebanese Blonde".
Fans can anticipate a new release in 2017 as they continue beyond the first twenty year chapter.
