John Hartford Memorial Festival
On June 3, 2017, I was privileged to be among the limited number of people present for the fourth day of the John Hartford Memorial Festival in quiet Bean Blossom, Indiana, at the Bill Monroe Music Park. A pedigree this strong promise high quality, enjoyable music, and I’m pleased to say the festival lived up to its name.
The John Hartford Memorial Festival is proud to announce the winner of their 2017 John Hartford Songwriter’s Challenge. 16 year old Micahan Boney from Claxton, GA, won first place with her song “Gone Too Soon”. A song about how the late Father of Newgrass, John Hartford inspired her.
In keeping with our John Hartford inspired genre busting tradition, JHMF 7 wants you to grab someone you love and join us for a spectacular Bluegrass/Jam band retro grass-rock event as the Travelin’ McCourys and the Jeff Austin Band will team up for their “Grateful Ball”! Each band will play a set and then come together for a set of Grateful Dead songs
John Hartford Memorial Festival is a testament to not only the legend himself, but to the genre and thriving music that was born and inspired by he & his ensemble of fellow bluegrass roots Americana musicians. There has been no beat skipped since his passing in 2001 and this festival’s continued growth further verifies that truth.

The 2014 John Hartford Memorial Festival (JHMF) Songwriting Contest has begun accepting entries, marking the start of its second year inspiring songwriters to go where they haven’t gone before. The songwriting contest is a little different than most, as it takes part in ensuring the legacy of John Hartford continues and thrives. Contest winners are awarded with a main stage performance and free 3-day festival ticket.Many great songwriters have come and gone, but few have been groundbreaking trendsetters.
