June 2022

Pulling into Summer Camp for my first time I couldn’t help but feel a bit apprehensive. Everything I’ve read or seen on the web says “It’s an amazing fest… as long as it doesn’t rain“ Yet, here I was, pulling up to the gate on Friday morning after 3 solid days of precipitation. Stepping out of my jeep into the parking lot I immediately sunk into the mud up to my ankles and thought to myself “Welp, I guess it’s time to get dirty!”

Four-time Grammy-winning, genre-defying musical collective Snarky Puppy is set to release their new album Empire Central on September 30 via the band’s own GroundUP Music imprint. Recorded over the course of eight nights in front of a live-in-studio audience at Dallas’ Deep Ellum Art Company, Empire Central consists of 16 all-new tracks heavily influenced by and paying homage to the city that gave birth to the group after they formed while studying in the fabled jazz program at the University of North Texas.

On Tuesday, May 24th, Indie folk-rockers Lord Huron brought their eloquent melodies to the venue on a beautiful balmy evening. As is the custom at the pristine venue nestled in the oak-lined mountainside in Paso Robles, smiling music fans arrived early to sample the winery's wares, local beers, and yummy snacks, including wood-fired pizza. The back lawn area filled up early, seemingly a favorite spot for the many who arrived with their families in tow. The summer sunset shortly before opener Erin Rae took the stage. Nashville singer-songwriter Erin Rae backed by a trio of accomplished folk-rockers, played a pleasing 40-minute set of tunes from her two albums. The folksy tunes benefited from some spicey slide guitar work from the band's guitarist.

Rock guitarist extraordinaire Mike Keneally passed his “audition” with Frank Zappa almost 35 years ago, when he was only 25 years old. Impressing the always-exacting composer, guitarist and performance artist wasn’t easy. But with his keen technical ability and singular, almost-photographic-memory recall of even Zappa’s most labyrinthine compositions, the then-young FZ devotee earned his “hall pass” to the inner realms of the band leader’s legendary 1988 tour band.
