BLUES PeopleBLUES People, the veteran four-piece band with roots in the vibrant New York/New Jersey music scene, is on a determined quest to conquer the 2025 International Blues Challenge (IBC), taking place January 7–11, 2025 on historic Beale Street. Last year’s IBC Semifinalists aim to make an indelible mark this time around—and land themselves on the Orpheum Theatre stage for the Finals.

“The blues has always been about storytelling,” says bassist Mike Griot, a successful jazz/blues show promoter and community activist. “Our stories are based upon where we’re from and what we’ve actually experienced. Over the last four years, BLUES People has connected with enthusiastic audiences through our live performances. We believe ours is the true story of four guys from the New York/New Jersey area sharing their urban reality through Blues music.”

After releasing two widely acclaimed promotional singles in 2022—“The Skin I’m In” and “Troubled Times”—BLUES People unveiled their debut album, The Skin I’m In, in 2024. The collection scored a nomination for “Best New Artist Debut Album” at the Blues Blast 2024 Music Awards and garnered praise from critics nationwide:

“It is entirely possible that four forty-year veterans of the local music scene are making the best music of their lives right now… Their live show is fantastic. Sleep on these guys at your own risk.”
Dave Popkin / WBGO

“Over the past three years, the North Jersey Blues Society has been fortunate to witness the incredible journey of BLUES People… their evolution is a testament to dedication and passion.”
Christy Benvenutti / NJBS

“BLUES People are a New Jersey/New York City band with a ton of musical experience… I can’t wait to see them live again; these guys are a really amazing band!”
Steve Jones / Blues Blast

Comprised of Kelton Cooper (vocals/guitar), Mike Griot (bass), Ron Thompson (keyboards), and Gene Lake (drums), each BLUES People member is a seasoned veteran who has paid his dues. Collectively, they have shared stages and studios with an array of world-class musicians—including Sue Foley, Josh Smith, Kool & the Gang, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Bo Diddley, and more—carving out their own unique sound, which Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine calls “what I think New York City blues sounds like today.”

In 2025, the band’s unwavering commitment to the blues tradition—infused with an urban edge—is propelling them toward IBC stardom. From blues fans to industry insiders, all eyes are on BLUES People as they bring their powerful, soulful performances to the heart of Memphis.
