GW Premiere: Voodoo Visionary's “Rings Around The Sun”

Hailing from the Dirty South musical mecca of Atlanta, GA, Voodoo Visionary’s improvisational funk dance music balances a tight, grooving rhythm section with soulful organ, funky clavinet, screaming synthesizers, jazz fusion guitar licks, and moving vocals to create a sound the group calls psychofunk. Influenced by a wide array of artists from Parliament Funkadelic and the Meters to the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band to Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, Voodoo Visionary has a uniquely blended sound that’s guaranteed to put the 'oogie in yo boogie.

The band is Trent Gilson (bass), Scott MacDonald (vocals), Jose Rivera (percussion) Mac Schmitz (drums), Marcus White (keys) and Mike Wilson (guitar). Over the past 11 years, these players have built a unique chemistry that allows for exceptional improvisation during live shows and relaxed and creative songwriting sessions.

Well known for their catchy tunes and energetic live shows, Voodoo Visionary’s first single of 2019 checks all the boxes. A strong introduction for new bassist, Trent Gilson, this song gives the first glimpse into the band’s evolving sound. It comes as the first of a group of three singles recorded earlier this year marking the last recordings with founding keyboardist Dennis Dowd. They are also some of the last songs co-written with founding bassist Jimmy Lynch. Voodoo Visionary introduced Marcus White as their new keyboardist in January, and if you have seen any of their live shows this year, you can tell the band hasn’t missed a single beat. “Rings Around the Sun” reminds fans new and old that Voodoo Visionary is here for a good time AND a long time. A feel-good composition, the audience can see the combined strength of each player come together with chemistry from beyond the ordinary realm. “Rings Around the Sun” is the perfect song to help you float through the end of summer, and its lyrics remind us to take time to appreciate the joys in life. As the band grows and continues to refine their sound, stay on the lookout for the rest of their summer releases! They are out on the road now – catch them at a show near you!
