Kupferberg Center for the Arts and Queens College Celebrate MLK Day with the Branford Marsalis Quartet

Kupferberg Center for the Arts (KCA) and Queens College are proud to present a momentous Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration featuring the acclaimed Branford Marsalis Quartet on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the renowned Colden Auditorium.

The event begins at 3 PM with a special MLK Recognition Ceremony and keynote address, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s enduring legacy and his historic connection to Queens College, where he delivered a memorable speech in 1965. This year’s keynote will be delivered by Arva Rice, President and CEO of the New York Urban League, whose leadership and advocacy reflect Dr. King’s vision. The ceremony is co-sponsored by the Office of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr.

At 4 PM, the Branford Marsalis Quartet, led by the celebrated NEA Jazz Master and three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis, will take the stage for a transformative performance. Known for their remarkable synergy and innovative artistry, the quartet will perform a repertoire that spans original compositions and timeless jazz standards.

Marsalis, a pioneering figure in jazz and contemporary music, has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic expression throughout his storied career. From his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to collaborations with Sting, the Grateful Dead, and Broadway productions, Marsalis has left an indelible mark on the music world.

Among his numerous accolades, Marsalis has been named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, earned a Tony nomination, and garnered a Primetime Emmy nomination. His humanitarian efforts, including co-founding the Musicians’ Village in post-Katrina New Orleans and serving as Artistic Director of the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, showcase his dedication to community and culture.
